Announcing the 2026 Spring Public Lecture and Events Series by NYIT School of Architecture & Design, featuring a variety of guest speakers, book launches, and events!⁠⁠Our next upcoming event is the Design X Intelligence Symposium coming up on April 9th! Design × Intelligence investigates the evolving relationship between artificial intelligence and the design disciplines. As AI becomes increasingly capable of generating visual concepts and analyzing information and complex systems, it transforms not just the tools designers use but the nature of design agency itself. What happens to creativity, authorship, and decision-making when intelligent systems can initiate design solutions, learn user needs, predict results, and intervene in the design process?⁠⁠By engaging scholars, technology experts, architecture and design practitioners, the symposium positions design as a critical actor in shaping AI’s trajectory. How will we live by the water in the future? Three thesis projects from the thesis studio this past year directed by faculty Jeanette Sordi, explore this question across New York City. ⁠⁠Chana Rhodes’s thesis Floyd Bennett Field as Airfield for Community and Research, transforms a decommissioned airfield into coastal defense and habitat restoration across three zones: adaptive reuse, recreation, and a water edge balancing public access with ecological health. ⁠⁠Aaron Kumpf’s Historic Reconnections in Red Hook, proposes a layered resilient approach that reconnects people, water, and place, creating over 20 acres of new public waterfront space while embracing industrial history and rising sea levels. ⁠⁠Khaoula El Jabaak’s Harbor of Care in the Rockaways, an architecture of journey between sand and water where healing unfolds through movement, light, and topography, blending land art with care without hierarchy between communal and solitary moments. As part of the 2026 W.A.Ve Workshop, NYIT Architecture students traveled with NYIT Professors Giovanni Santamaria and Evan Shieh for a weekend excursion to Vicenza, tracing the architectural significance of Andrea Palladio! NYIT W.A.Ve Workshop students got the opportunity while in Venice to visit the international Venice Biennale 2026, exploring both major venues, the Giardini and the Arsenale, as part of their architectural and cultural studies during their academic trip.⁠⁠Across the the Carlo Scarpa designed Giardini delle Sculture, its various national pavilions, exhibitions, installations, and curatorial spaces, students encountered a wide range of approaches to architecture, art, representation, materiality, technology, ecology, and cultural identity. As the 2026 W.A.Ve Workshop entered its final days, New York Tech, School of Architecture and Design, Dean Maria Perbellini traveled to Italy and visited the NYIT atelier to share words of encouragement with students as they completed their projects and prepared for the final exhibition!⁠⁠Dean Perbellini joined the studio during an important moment of production, offering desk critiques and feedback, engaging with IUAV faculty and students, and supporting the NYIT Architecture students as they refined their final drawings, presentations, and models.⁠⁠At the end of the day, Dean Perbellini took the traveling NYIT students out for a celebratory end-of-workshop dinner, followed by a evening visit to Il Redentore, Andrea Palladio’s iconic church on Giudecca. Workshop final reviews/exams were conducted at the 2026 W.A.Ve Workshop! NYIT Architecture students and their IUAV teammates presented their projects in their end of workshop exam, to the atelier instructors including NYIT Associate Dean Giovanni Santamaria who joined in-person. During their Milan weekend excursion, NYIT W.A.Ve Workshop students also visited the New Urban Campus for Bocconi University, designed by SANAA, reflecting on how architecture can organize movement, collective life, and urban connection through a porous campus model.⁠⁠The campus offered students an opportunity to study how contemporary architecture can shape academic life through openness, permeability, and a strong relationship between buildings, courtyards, landscape, and the city. During their Milan weekend excursion, NYIT W.A.Ve Workshop students visited the renowned Fondazione Prada, designed by OMA, as part of their exploration of the city’s contemporary architectural culture.⁠⁠The visit offered students the opportunity to experience one of Milan’s most significant adaptive reuse projects, where former industrial buildings are transformed through a layered dialogue between preservation, intervention, material contrast, and new cultural programming. Over the July 4th weekend, NYIT W.A.Ve Workshop students traveled from Venice to Milan for a weekend excursion exploring the city’s rich architectural history, urban fabric, and contemporary design culture.⁠⁠Students visited Milan’s historic center, including the extraordinary Duomo di Milano and its rooftop terraces, where they experienced the cathedral’s intricate Gothic structure, sculptural details, and panoramic views across the city. NYIT Architecture students and their IUAV teammates are hard at work in the 2026 W.A.Ve Workshop!⁠⁠Students recently participated in an interim pin-up review showcasing a field of paper process models developed across NYIT's atelier section. Organized into 8 groups, 4 elemental lenses, and an archipelago of 8 global & extraterrestrial sites, the work explores conditions of air, ground, water, ecology, balance, and sacredness across multiple contexts.⁠ Pinup reviews give students the opportunity to present their design process, discuss early spatial ideas, and receive feedback from atelier instructors and peers. An outstanding body of work emerged from the Spring 2026 “Participatory Practices in Urbanism” course taught by Christopher Kroner, Principal at MASS Design Group, as part of the M.S. in Architecture, Urban Design (MS.AUD) program at New York Institute of Technology - New York Tech School of Architecture and Design!⁠⁠One of the core missions of our Urban Design program is to prepare future practitioners who understand that meaningful urban transformation involves listening, collaboration, and community engagement. This seminar exemplified that philosophy by challenging students to move beyond detached or extractive forms of analysis and instead embrace fieldwork, facilitation, and participatory processes as fundamental urban design methodologies. ⁠⁠Working in collaboration with Friends of the Walkway, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and promoting the Walkway Over the Hudson, students explored how local knowledge and lived experience can directly inform and shape future visions for the public realm.
