Enjoy the splendour of Raga Shree via this composition by Ustad Umar Khan (1916-1982) of the Lucknow-Shahjahanpur Gharana, taught with much love by Ustad @irfan.muhammadkhan ji. Premiers at 12:00 PM EST today. Link in Bio!

Gratitude to @canada.council for their invaluable support, and thanks to project partners @agakhanmuseum and @smallworldnotes. Lovely accompaniment as usual by Toronto's unassuming #tabla wiz @abbas.jan.

Had a wonderful time working on this project with Arnab Bhai, focused on recording and preserving several traditional compositions from the Lucknow-Shahjahanpur tradition. A treat to be a part of this project which included some other fantastic artists as well. Do check out Arnab’s YouTube page for the full recording along with the others! taken in Aga Khan Museum by @nylonnails

Arnab Chakrabarty demonstrates the various possibilities of expressing the same "skeletal" melodic phrases in novel and specific ways when elaborating a raag.

Using this example in Raag Shyam Kalyan, Arnab @nylonnails elucidated how raag music can be understood as a realtime process-driven system where the outcome is not known prior to the unfolding of a performance.

This is an excerpt from a larger conversation we had on the nature of raag music, musical demonstrations of form and history on sarod, his aesthetic and artistic values, an overview of the Shahjahanpur gharana, and the question of making raag sangeet legible to curious newcomer audiences without dilution.

More to come soon 🤞

About the artist: Arnab Chakrabarty is one of the foremost exponents of sarod in the world. He has trained under luminaries of both branches of Shahjahanpur gharana - Bengal (Pt. Buddhadev Das Gupta & Dr. Kalyan Mukherjea) and Lucknow (Ustad Irfan Muhammad Khan). He currently resides in Burlington, Ontario, Canada
