Charles Ives’s Symphony No. 2 is a collage of hymns, marching-band tunes, square dances, and countless other musical elements drawn from everyday American life. ⁠

Widely recognized as the first authentically American composer, Ives was an insurance man who composed at night and a passionate nationalist who—with help from his father (a small-town bandleader)—based his music on traditional tunes while incorporating daring and unexpected tonal and rhythmic compositional choices. ⁠

NYO-USA, NYO2, and NYO Jazz have all wrapped up the first full week of their 2026 residency! All three of our national youth ensembles are now at @sunypurchase, preparing for their performances at Carnegie Hall and on tour.

Throughout the past week, 208 musicians from 36 states plus the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico have been working with guest faculty members, building community, and rehearsing as full ensembles ahead of their exciting tours on three continents.

🎻 July 30: @meiann.chen leads NYO2 in several audience favorites, including Gershwin’s “An American in Paris,” Respighi’s “Pines of Rome,” and Michael Torke’s “Sky” with violinist @tessalark.

🎼 July 31: Under the baton of @karina.canellakis, NYO-USA performs Barber’s Overture to “The School for Scandal,” Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra, and Gershwin’s Piano Concerto in F with soloist @kgerstein.

🎷 Aug 1: Trumpeter and bandleader @krisjohnsonmusic makes his debut with NYO Jazz, exploring timeless jazz standards and big-band gems with guest vocalist @deedeebridgewater.

Each summer, Carnegie Hall brings together talented up-and-coming musicians for its trio of youth ensembles: NYO-USA, NYO2, and NYO Jazz. Teens from across the nation audition to be part of these free, rigorous training programs that culminate in concerts on celebrated stages around the globe.

While the participants are eager to hone their performing skills, they are also keen to bond with their fellow youth musicians, both domestically and abroad. The artistic and cultural exchange among peers is not only invaluable, but it is also perspective shifting.
