POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
their email to university employees on Feb. 25, President Linda Mills and Provost Gigi Dopico wrote that “faculty who are not in the CFU-UAW bargaining unit are required to continue carrying out their responsibilities.” In the midst of a paragraph about the university’s contingency plans to hire substitutes, this sentence sounds like an admonition to faculty to cooperate with the administration. We remind NYU that it is a violation of the NLRA to threaten an employee — any employee — with adverse consequences for supporting a union, or for engaging in “other concerted activities for the purpose of collective bargaining or other mutual aid or protection.”

The point of a strike is for a collective of workers to gauge and exert their power, in order to put pressure on the negotiation process. For the sake of our contract faculty colleagues, other faculty should not intervene in that process. For our own sake, too, we should not set a dangerous precedent by voluntarily acquiescing to NYU’s capricious demands for our additional labor. Rather than peering through their classroom windows to check if they are on the picket line, we ought to stand by our CFU colleagues as one united faculty. by @nyuaaup

Scabbing refers to agreeing to take on work that our colleagues are withholding as part of a collective labor action. You might face pressure to keep their classes and departmental work running during a strike. The absence or withdrawal of our colleagues’ work is meant to be felt, rather than covered over.

At NYU, in the event of a strike, this might look like: taking on committee work that colleagues are withholding; teaching their classes, merging sections, or simply sharing slides or showing a film; grading student work or advising students in place of colleagues. The administration is already beginning to request faculty to “cover” classes and administrative work in the event of a strike. AAUP urges you to exercise your legal right to REFUSE these requests to do this “struck work.”

Facts: It is illegal for the university administration to pressure or intimidate you into taking on the work of colleagues who are striking. Department and program leaders can ask, but cannot put pressure on you, so don’t feel that you have to take on that work. It further divides our faculty and may prolong rather than shorten the strike.

A strong, informed and united faculty is needed now, more than ever. Join NYU-AAUP https://www.AAUP.org/join by @nyuaaup

In the wake of CFU’s contract victory, tenured/tenure-track and non-union contract faculty have seen meaningful salary and benefits adjustments. These gains did not manifest out of nowhere. They are the direct result of union organizing on NYU’s campus. Want to organize your unit? Get in touch today!!

On May Day @cfuuaw joined members of the NY Metro Coalition for Higher Education to rally for workers rights at The New School, St John’s University, and at institutions across the sector. Organized to coincide with @centrallabornyc’s Washington Square rally, the event brought together faculty groups, politicians, and the wider community to advance a vision of higher education as a public good.

NEW TODAY: in the New York Times:

In the face of unprecedented authoritarian attacks on our sector, the AAUP is building a powerful and militant resistance movement in defense of American higher education, the freedom to learn, and our democracy.

“Demand letters to universities, a compact which is nothing more than a loyalty oath, ideologically driven state houses that are ending tenure and collective-bargaining rights, ending academic freedom — and you’re going to tell me I should be neutral?” AAUP President Todd Wolfson said.

“There’s no neutrality on a runaway train.”

Dear Mayor Mamdani,

It is the fifth day of the home attendants' hunger strike. These women of color, who worked heavy 24 hour shifts are now standing against the freezing wind to call for the immediate submission of Intro 303 and an end to the racist sexist violence of 24 hour workday here in New York City.

The NYU community are deeply concerned by how these women's demands are not heard by the city, so we initiated an open letter to urge you to pass Intro 303 and end the 24 hour workday for the home attendants immediately.
