Looking for a dystopic, magical fantasy world mixed with a gritty sci-fi military vibe and absolute weapons for main characters?

Add Under the Iron Sky to your TBR!

Our world of Vordell flourishes and runs entirely on sunlight, which the humans harness via their high tech. But enter our bad guys, and pretty soon humanity is fighting a losing battle on dwindling technological resources.

It is tech vs magic, and the whole book feels like an apocalyptic, survivalist war zone where this tech-dependent human army is getting absolutely steamrolled by a dark, magical underworld.

This is a true, blue "I hate your guts" story. Our FMC Soraya and MMC Ikarus absolutely detest each other. Like, if you were on fire, they would happily drink the water, laugh, and watch you burn kind of hate!

I am a total SUCKER for a strong FMC, and Soraya is a literal weapon. She is a high-ranking military commander, she’s smart, scrappy, fiercely independent, and angry—and she gives as good as she gets. But when we switch over to Ikarus's POV? Holy moly, he is such a badass. He is fiercely loyal to his family, incredibly strong, and determined. He is carrying a mountain of secrets and trauma 😟 and I honestly cannot wait to see more of him in the next book.

I am so happy this story has been split into a trilogy because it means we are getting the depth and detail. If you’ve read the fanfic, Secrets & Masks, you know that its massive at over 1.3k pages!

As for the actual writing, it is fast-paced. The tension and atmospheric building are done so well, and we get a total first-person immersion alternating between both of our MCs. I did appreciate that the first act wasn’t an insane, heavy world dump—which let’s be honest, is quite common in these Dramione-to-trad-published works!

I did find that the middle sections slumped a little bit due to a lack of action, where the prose falls into a heavier world-build. I also felt like the writing in the last few chapters became a bit more basic and rushed, which took me back to that unpolished fanfic feel.

This is an absolute ride though! If you want a fantasy filled with angst & tension, check it out!

4 stars + 1 for the vibe 🙌 by @nzbookfae

It was my moral obligation to the bookstagram girlies to zoom in on the end.

But also, this sounds good cant wait to dive in!

When the hunter is hunted, who becomes prey?
SHE IS THE EMPEROR’S ENEMY

Knight Mage and Bear of the North Zora Ravenal is her people’s only hope against the ravenous empire.

HE IS THE HUNTER’S MARK

Emperor and royal mage Aleksander the Sadistic is hellbent on possessing Zora and smothering the rebellion.

With the world at his command – including Tarantula, the deadliest assassin in the empire’s arsenal – Aleksander will stop at nothing to satisfy his obsession. But the emperor has made one mistake … Zora is hunting them too.

Absolutely spoilt with Dramione fanfics turned trad pub this year!

Bloody love it so far, and i can EASILY picture this as a video game, it would be so fun to play as either Soraya or Ikarus...it started off with an Alien Isolation x Metal Gear vibe and now I am feeling a bit of Bioshock. But the Secrets & Masks girlies? You WILL love it. I honestly cant wait for them to bang 😂😂😂

Is this one on your radar?

Looks like another 5 star lining up for me this year, and if you have followed my reviews for awhile, you know how often I give those out (i dont 🤣).

Publishing in NZ Oct 13, releasing towards the end of the month! Massive thank you to @penguinbooksnz
and Kyla for the proof copy, suuuuper appreciated 👏

Let me know where you guys are finding your special editions!!!
