| UPCOMING EXHIBITION | 2025 Arnold Newman Finalist: Nzingah Oyo – “Of 30 Siblings” (@nzingahoyo | @mainemedia)

Finalist Nzingah Oyo’s work depicts layered narratives that examine and celebrate culture, politics, and global social dynamics.

Growing up in a large polygamous Muslim family in Brooklyn, Islamic and African traditions blended with the city’s energy, shaping the practices carried forward.

Her project, “Of 30 Siblings” celebrates the Oyo family through formal portraits shot with a 4×5 view camera over 25 years. The series explores the intersection of African and Islamic heritage with urban Brooklyn life.

Congratulations from the Griffin Museum Team!

ON VIEW: December 5 – January 4, 2026

Thank you, @mainemedia and @griffinmuseum , for allowing me to finish the year off with the view in sight. Returning to my path as a career artist after a period of stillness hasn’t been a walk in the park. The past several years have felt more like climbing a mountain with a view camera, each step intentional. At times, the challenges seemed to outweigh the calm path, but with perseverance, I began to see the scenery emerging just beyond the trees.

I was first introduced to Arnold Newman’s work during my undergraduate years. I vividly remember turning the pages of his book Artists, captivated by his technique: « It just happened—happened as a result of trying to work out my ideas. » This is photography for me: the seeing, printing, experimenting with ideas, and allowing things to unfold naturally. I am deeply honored to be a finalist once again for The Arnold Newman Prize. Thank you to the panelists for considering my words, work, and process. Congratulations to all the artist.

Mood: Eyes closed, the smell of white musk fading into a scent of lavender and eucalyptus. My hands grace a field of flowers. The peaceful sound of birds and nature fill my heart with love and happiness. I think; look how beautiful god created the world . The coexistence of species. These flowers share one space yet their beauty equally resonate with us.

🤲🏽🕋Praying for world peace!! Let’s not forget our children must have something positive to look forward to.

In 2003, I had the honor of attending the Light Work Artist-in-Residence (AIR) program in Syracuse. This was my first residency, and I felt deeply honored to be selected among the many talented artists who have contributed to the program over the years. During my time there, I was able to create my series Objects of Investigation, which explored Islamophobia through the lens of a 4x5 camera creating portrait diptychs. Members from the Syracuse Muslim community participated in the project. This body of work was later exhibited in a solo exhibit at Esso gallery in Chelsea.

I was pleasantly surprised to receive the catalog 💝 yesterday. I am also honored to be featured in the Light Work at 50 catalogue. Thank you! @lightworkorg
