We are deeply saddened by the passing of Dame Helene Quilter DNZM QSO.

Dame Helene was a prominent arts patron and a former board member of the New Zealand School of Dance Board of Trustees. Her generosity and passion left a lasting mark, especially her commitment to believing the joy and wonder of the arts have a central place in the lives of our young people.

Three of our #classicalballet students - Charlotte Rota, Coco Giera and Izzy Hoult - are currently attending The Royal Danish Ballet Summer School 2026 at The Royal Danish Theatre in Copenhagen.

The mission of the summer school is to facilitate the connection between young dancers in professional training across international borders and share the Bournonville legacy with a new generation of artists. taken in Royal Danish Theatre by @nzschoolofdance

Nau mai, haere mai! We warmly welcome Coco Perrott and Chloe Ting from Canada's National Ballet School, as they join us for three weeks here at the New Zealand School of Dance.

We're delighted to return the hospitality @nbs_enb showed our 2nd Yr students Phoebe Ewington, Miriyan Barnes and Hiroki So in Toronto earlier this year.

We treasure the longstanding bond between our two schools and are excited by the sharing of learning, culture and creative inspiration that comes through every student exchange. 🇨🇦🇳🇿🇨🇦🇳🇿🇨🇦🇳🇿 taken in Te Whaea—National Dance & Drama Centre by @nzschoolofdance

Wishing @nzballet tons of chookas for the opening of their 2026 Winter Season tomorrow night at the St James Theatre, Wellington.

The programme of three works is dedicated to the late Matz Skoog, who died earlier this year.

July 14 is #BastilleDay, which celebrates the 1789 storming of the Bastille. Deeply rooted in French culture, the holiday is historically celebrated in France with massive fireworks and military parades.

Ballet terminology and foundational techniques are entirely French, largely due to King Louis XIV, who founded the world's first ballet academy in 1669.

While the French Revolution (which Bastille Day commemorates) temporarily made ballet a dangerous art associated with the ousted aristocracy, today it has survived as an essential expression of global culture.
