it’s beautifully chaotic to see all the research accumulated on a screen i spend the greater part of my hours looking at

moodboards, notes to self, pdfs of essays (my own or others) i will never read again

now it’s in the ether, clean, reborn

Who is POiSON GiRLFRiEND? An Interview with nOrikO

POiSON GiRLFRiEND [@poison_girl_friend_official] has always been an enigma, she’s a trip-hop pioneer from the ’90s with a sound far ahead of its time.

Now, her sleeper-hit albums SHYNESS [1993] and LOVE ME [1994] are finally being reissued as a CD with bonus tracks and unreleased remixes, alongside a long-awaited tour across Europe from Aug.23- Sept.6, 2025 and in the US from Oct 17-Nov 4.

The announcement shocked her new generation of fans, who’ve been begging for a PGF return for years, mostly international listeners who weren’t even born when her debut album released.

For the uninitiated, POiSON GiRLFRiEND [also known as nOrikO] is a Japanese singer and DJ credited as a trip-hop pioneer, who achieved underground popularity in the 90s.
Her sound, in her own words called “tragi-pop,” blends whispery vocals with beats that melt and gently throb, drawing from bossa nova, French Yé-yé, techno, and a sprinkle of Shibuya-kei.
Her blend of genres and languages in her work reflects her upbringing in Brazil and Japan, alongside her deep love of French New Wave. A certified crate-digger since high school, nOrikO began recording music after exposure to London’s ’80s club scene.

SHYNESS came about through a twist of fate. Inspired by Momus’s album The Poison Boyfriend, she chose her stage name in tribute. One day, Momus picked up her album in Shibuya, liked it, and mentioned it in an interview. They connected and created SHYNESS together in London over three months.

LOVE ME, self-produced in Japan, showed a more self assured persona. Listening to it feels like being a heroine in a French New Wave film. nOrikO is a fan of French director Leos Carax, so that tracks. You feel like a girl with bangs and smudged eyeliner, sipping milk tea while staring out a train window, thinking about the past. Stylishly.

LOVE ME was her last album before a 20-year hiatus.

What do we believe in now, after everything has collapsed?

I spoke to @dazedstudio about the myths, rituals, and stories guiding youth identity in NYC and Tokyo. Collectively we are making new systems now that algorithms decide what we see, AI blurs what’s real, and polycrisis dominates the news.

Glad to be in such great company (Marina Abramovic!!) with the other featured contributors.
