From the “don’t forget what you learned on Saturday” corner ….

Position creates opportunity.

When you reach too far and your elbows get away from your body, you give your opponent space to clear your arms and attack underneath.

Stay compact, keep your feet underneath you, and stay ready to react.

Small details.

Big difference.

If you really want it, get comfortable with “over and over.”

The drilling can get boring, but that’s where the habits take hold, the shot gets sharper, and the fundamentals become your foundation.

Give every rep your attention and get ready to put in plenty of them.

A few lessons from the mat with Danny Castillo.

The message was simple from the start: fundamentals always work.

And from there, the room went to work.

No tricks.

No crazy moves.

Build the foundation.

Good position. Good defense. Solid shots.

The things you can trust as the competition gets tougher.

“Wrestling’s a mind game. You gotta be tough.”

Get the leg back. Make them feel your defense. Keep working.

Technique and mindset working together, because wrestling asks for both.

“It’s not a fight all the time. We gotta gain the skill before we go into the fight.”

Learn how to drill. Learn how to give your partner the right resistance. Learn how to help each other get better.

Fundamentals. Mindset. Partnership.

Build it right. Drill it right. Trust it when it counts.

The gems are in the details. Simple lessons. Sound wrestling. The kind that stays with you. taken in Watsonville, California by @oakieskidz

A huge thank you to Danny Castillo from Grit N Grace Academy, Oakies Kidz, Watsonville Wrestling, and all our local athletes! For an AWESOME Clinic !!!!!

This is the kind of passion we need on the mat.

Danny brought the details, the intensity, and a love for wrestling that the kids could feel.

Thank you for pouring your energy, experience, and heart into our youth. These lessons will stay with them through the next practice, the next match, and beyond.

We’ll share a few clips and candids throughout the coming week to recap an incredible morning.

So much good stuff to look back on.

We can’t wait to have you back, Danny! taken in Watsonville, California by @oakieskidz

When someone who has competed on the world stage comes back to teach the next generation, it gives our kids a chance to see what’s possible.

Grit N Grace Academy, Oakie’s Kidz, and Watsonville High Wrestling are excited to welcome Danny “The Last Call” Castillo a two-time NAIA All-American and national runner-up at Menlo College, UFC and WEC veteran, and Team Alpha Male coach.

“Community is what happens when we show up for each other.”

A beach cleanup gives us a reason to come together, move, talk, laugh, and take care of a place we share.

That time together matters.

Our kids get to see what community looks like when people show up and do something good side by side.

Oakies Kidz and Grit N Grace are grateful for everyone who came out and everyone who supported the day.

Let’s carry that energy into a great week ❤️‍🔥🌊☀️👊🏽🤼‍♀️🤼‍♂️ taken in Manresa State Beach by @oakieskidz

As this school year starts coming to an end, I’ve been thinking a lot about what it’s meant to spend this year with the students at Alianza.

From first/ second grade, to third/ fourth, fifth/ sixth, and our seventh/ eighth grade girls and the boys….every group brought its own energy, personality, challenges, and joy to the mat. But across every age and every class, one thing stayed the same: kids need movement.

They need connection. They need space to be loud, curious, expressive, competitive, playful, and fully themselves.

The last few weeks especially, kids have been trying to come into class on days that weren’t theirs just because they saw the mats out.
Some would cross the parking lot early before they were supposed to, hoping to help set up or just be in the room.

To me, that says more than anything else ever could.

For many of them, this was their first exposure to wrestling.

And while I hope they learned shots, stances, balance, discipline, and resilience, more than anything, I hope they learned this: falling down is part of life. So is frustration. So is discomfort. But you always have a choice to get back up, try again, adjust, grow, and keep moving forward.

That’s what learning is. That’s what sports are. That’s what life is.

One more week left, and I’m leaving this year full of pride and hope for these kids and who they’re becoming.
