Day 15 - Finale!

This post, today, marks the end of mine and Kent Scouts’ expedition to Ghana! After our landing in Istanbul, I went and grabbed a nice coffee, and sat waiting at our gate for our final flight outbound from Turkey, to London Stansted! The flight was about 3 hours and 58 minutest, which was a tad faster than predicted, and it shot by! I rewatched the Hail Mary movie and played a couple games, but I couldn’t sleep on this flight for some reason!

Anyways, thank you so much for following along with my journey, and thank you so much to everyone who helped get me there! 👋

Day/Night 12 - Extra Post.

We have now had our bonfire! We had a lovely surprise too, we were gifted a certificate as well as a Kente weave with our names woven into them too! It was a very moving event to mark the end of this little era here in Woe, and I’m very sad to have to go now.

Everyone took the time to reflect on their journey, some of us didn’t know what to say, but I mentioned about how I didn’t know what to expect and how I was extremely nervous going into it given how parts of Kenya happened.

We were all also given special awards, where mine was for my resilience, apparently I was the most resilient person on this expedition, which was really endearing to me!

As Kelvin said, “every journey comes to an end, be it by the sea or by the air, we must all return to where we came” (paraphrasing the last few words), which is very true, and we will all miss our guides, as they have been so fantastic to all of us these last two weeks.

We still have one and a bit days left with them however, so we will be sure to make the absolute most out of it!

See you tomorrow x.

Day/Night 8!
Today was our 4th day at our partner school, Abutia Rhema!

Much like yesterday, we were making mortar, and pointing bricks. We made no bricks today however, and we began to build up the new wall from its foundation that we helped to make yesterday! We also made more foundation/concrete material for the pillars between the wall segments, which contained stones and cement mix.

To break the day up, we had lunch which was Jolofrice with egg and salad!

In the evening, we also had a drumming lesson, which we all got very involved with, and some people even went off and created their own tunes! We also learned a few things about what the patterns on the drums mean, the plain light one being one which will make the player more creative, another for strength and stamina.

For dinner, we had spaghetti of sorts with an oily tomato sauce and other vegetables.

That was the end of today! Tomorrow will be the last day of proper activities at the school, as Friday will be a farewell celebration and rest.

Day/Night 7!

Today was our third day at our partner school! We had much more structure in our instructions, as we requested from Kelvin and Francis, last night, in our debrief. Us as the building team, we were on making even more bricks (as a running trend for the rest of this week haha), laying bricks (including the pointing, where I scribbled my name!), and contributing to a foundation for the new wall we will be starting soon!

For the first part of today I was very ran down, and had to take a long break; I was not feeling well, and it’s gotten a bit worse as of writing this, so I’m going to play everything ear. So the rest of the team was constructing bricks and moving the set ones over to the wall for later.

After a lunch of Red Red, plantain, and cooking banana (I still can’t think of the name, even though I heard it today), I rejoined the group, and this was where I helped with the pointing and foundation laying.

When we got back to the volunteer house, we had a while of rest and then a lesson on Traditional Ghanaian, and comparisons to Modern Ghanaian, marriage; this was a fair shock, but the modern customs have some things very much in common, whilst other parts are very much different to ours.

For dinner, we had a semi spicy pasta dish with what looked to be a Yam!

This is the end of today’s log!
I will keep up to date on how I’m feeling, and what I do and don’t get up to!

Day 4 - Extra Post.

I figured I’d post this as it stands out to me. I have found that there are very few, but a significant amount, of luxury homes placed in the more deprived areas.
In a way, it doesn’t surprise me that only a select few own most of the country’s wealth, given how Ghana is at the moment, but it wasn’t something I expected to see so rampantly. by @oakleigh_d05

Day/Night 1 in Ghana!
Today was purely travel and a small introduction to one of the partner scouting groups in the immediate area!

Today was lots and lots of security checkpoints and customs and sitting on a cramped airplane haha.

The food was very nice though, and apart from what I bought before hand, I had pancakes baked with banana slices inside them, with a sweet custard like topping and a sour cranberry jam too, which also had some antipasti bits and an almond cake slice which I doused in the cherry jam to make a cherry bakewell lol!

As a small addition to the first draft, I was reintroduced to the wonders of the hyper aggressive driving styles on the road over in Africa!

See you tomorrow!

Here are all my donations which I’m giving to the Rhema Abutia School, in Ghana 🇬🇭.

I wanted to say a massive thank you to those who made these donations, be it the money which bought these donations, or the donations themselves; to those tagged below and all those who have contributed! If you could share this post around to help it reach everyone who also donated, who I don’t have on Facebook, I would be very grateful! X

I will be sure to keep you posted on anything extra before, and after, my journey, and everything in between!
