Celebrate your freedom to read at the 2nd Annual Banned Books Teen Read-a-thon! From Wednesday, October 7th through Friday, October 9th, drop in to the Main Library TeenZone and curl up with a banned book anytime from opening to closing. American Library Association's (ALA) Office for Intellectual Freedom tracked 4,235 unique titles challenged in 2025, the second highest ever documented by ALA. Can we read that many books? We don't know! But let's see how far we can get - we'll have a large selection of challenged and banned books to choose from, as well as snacks for you to enjoy while you read.

Like to read and craft? Us too. Join us for the following craft hangs during Banned Books Week:

โœจ Bedazzle a Banned Book
Wednesday, October 7th @ 3:00 - 5:00pm
Transform the cover of your favorite banned book! Learn how to sparkle it up with the art of bedazzling. We'll have plenty of books to choose from or you can bring your own.

๐ŸŽ’ Banned Books Button-Making
Thursday, October 8th @ 3:30 - 4:30pm
Rep your favorite banned books by turning them into buttons to pin onto your keychain, backpack, hat, whatever with our button machine.

๐Ÿ”‘ Mini Banned Books Keychains
Friday, October 9th @ 3:30 - 4:30pm
Make your own miniature banned book keychain. Choose from a variety of book covers from recent banned books, including: Gender Queer, Hunger Games, 1984, The Hate U Give, Looking for Alaska, Heartstopper, and more.

For teens 12-18 - all materials provided.

โฐ Time: 3:00 - 5:00 PM
๐Ÿ“ 125 14th St, 2nd Floor TeenZone, Oakland, CA 94612

๐Ÿชก It's National Sewing Month! Learn how to use needle and thread to add a 3D pop of color to your zines!

OCTOBER 21 - Spooky Szn
๐Ÿ‘ป Celebrate all that's scary, creepy, and haunted!

NOVEMBER 18 - Current Obsession
๐Ÿคฉ Whatever you stan, share it with us in a zine about your current obsessions!

DECEMBER 16 - How-To
โœ๏ธ Whether it's crochet, surviving freshman year, or picking the perfect potato chip flavor - we want you to take us step-by-step and teach us how-to!

We provide all the materials: all kinds of paper, pens/markers, magazines to cut up, folding tools, long arm stapler, paper trimmer, scanner, and free photocopying/printing. You'll also have the option to donate a copy of your zine to the Teen Zine Collection at the Main Library!

What's a zine? Pronounced "zeen," zines are DIY booklets made by collaging text and images together to share your niche interests and personal experiences through low-stakes creative self-expression. The best thing about zines is that anyone can make them โ€“ they're easy, cheap, and can explore literally any topic or theme. No rules, no filters, no algorithm โ€“ just pure pre-internet vibes, made by you because you love what you love.
