KELLI ROSE BY ME!

Part 2 of an on-going series highlighting the brilliant worlds my friends have built around them, and where they come home to themselves.

“The process of composting is activating, it’s imperfect, and it requires us to adapt to the needs of the windrow. Composting alchemizes recognizable food waste into a soil additive that is one-tenth its original size and can hold roughly 20 times its weight in water. I believe that there are many lessons about change and grief we can learn watching the compost process unfold. It mirrors the cyclical repurposing of our experiences so that we can better know and welcome both joy and grief. Something rotten, dead and ‘finished’ is moved by a hungry community of microorganisms into the next phase of meaning. It makes me feel so myself to be in a place where I can facilitate that next phase of being in tandem with nature and my community while simultaneously listening to the I-5 Freeway humming in the distance at LA Compost’s Griffith Park Hub.” - Kelli

(PS this is her magical song!)

Happy & joyful life update… Jake and I got engaged last week!! We got to celebrate all day long with friends and family. It was magical and intentional and he is the best person in the whole wide world.

The privilege we have to celebrate safely with our loved ones isn’t awarded to a lot of people that we are in community with in Los Angeles because of the horrifying, unwanted, and unlawful abductions by ICE. The joy and rage that coincide as I write this are held with equal, but not opposing weight. I hope to use joy as an activator in resistance. I hope to use love to better listen to vulnerable people. I hope to lean on and grow the absolutely wonderful community that Jake and I have built to create a better world, and I have hope that a better world is possible if we keep fighting. Jake’s unwavering love makes me a better person every single day and I’m so dang excited to marry him.

Also thank you so so so much to our friends and family for making this day so special. There were FIVE big surprises and we felt so completely loved. by @oatmeal.bread

I feel curious these days about how my personal relationship to nature and being accountable to my community are connected. The more obsessed with community composting and urban farming I become, the more connected I feel to myself and my community. It makes so much sense and yet it still blows my mind. Maybe because I’m realizing how disconnected I was for so long? I really don’t know. I broke down crying at a botanical garden recently, feeling overwhelmed with gratitude for the space existing and grief of how simple it can be to curate healthy native habitat, but how little we prioritize it. It felt like a gift to be in tune with both at once. Both at once.

How can naming the grief I feel for nature help heal it? How can I acknowledge the fear I feel for the future but not fall victim to it? How can I dance on the line between community engagement and individual accountability as I heal? How can I approach it all with lightness and joy like Cami teaches me? The Kickstarter pack for me is one packet of Nina’s native seed mix spread wherever feels right, one compost windrow turned with Maggie and the Doof Sparks on Friday morning, and one day off photosynthesizing at the Silverlake meadow not doing anything and feeling zero guilt. 🪱🐛 taken in Los Angeles, California by @oatmeal.bread

I turned 30 yesterday. My biggest accomplishment so far in life is undoubtedly my community. I am surrounded by the most creative, silly, inclusive and kind people. I’m a lucky duck.

some highlights from 29 —

Going to Yosemite in the spring and getting to sit under Nevada falls eating carrots and hummus. Seeing one of my favorite cousins get married overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and seeing another cousin become a dad. Moving in with Jake and road tripping up to Canada in our van named Rizzo. Completing my first year of a MSW program and getting a job where I get to be a small piece in a puzzle that connects people in my community to the health of their soil. Swimming in natural springs near Christmas tree farms in Bonny Dune. Riding my bike to the garden in frogtown. Oooooh and driving Rizzo across a river even though it felt super scary.

Lots of fun things lots of sad things lots of homework lots of procrastinating lots of laughing and lots of crying. I feel scared and hopeful and energized and exhausted all at once and thank goodness the days are getting longer now! by @oatmeal.bread
