Op Instagram ben ik kunstenaar, maar op LinkedIn ben ik technisch tekenaar. Misschien verbaast het u (niet). In de recente groei van grafische kunst richting driedimensionale objecten ontdekte ik dat deze twee werelden prachtig kunnen overlappen.

Als kunstenaar fascineert mij vooral de constructie, het materiaal, de techniek, de verhoudingen en de manier waarop iets wordt opgebouwd. Als technisch tekenaar doorloop ik vooral ik de daaropvolgende stappen: het vertalen van bestaande objecten, uitvindingen en nieuwe ontwikkelingen naar heldere, nauwkeurige technische tekeningen.

Ter begeleiding van mijn eerste vijf ‘wandconstructies’ maakte ik telkens een technische tekening. Waarom? Ik zou zeggen; een grote liefde voor het vak, en een beetje humor… Deze wandsculpturen zijn namelijk alles behalve functioneel, ze hebben ook geen bescherming, geen handleiding, geen technische tekening nodig. Omdat ze vaak een beetje onnodig complex zijn opgebouwd, is dit een mooi visitekaartje voor mezelf als tekenaar.

Some of you might remember; In 2013 I worked on a series of screen prints depicting hands and unidentified objects; small sculptural forms held, manipulated, or activated by hands. Since then, I have continuously collected such objects wherever I encountered them: on construction sites, in abandoned buildings, in second-hand stores...

My fascination with construction was present long before it became visible. It was concealed behind canvases built from discarded materials from the screen-printing industry. Every work functioned as a puzzle, a structure, or a tower; an exercise in assembling, balancing, and building.

In my recent sculptural work, that impulse has moved to the foreground. The act of constructing, attaching, and combining has become more direct and tangible. The collected objects themselves have become protagonists, finding new life through simple acts of resurrection, recontextualization, and connection.

I hope you will join me on this journey towards the more physical, uncompromising, and free from pretension; works that embrace the ordinary while revealing new possibilities within it. — Obed Vleugels, 2026

Vandaag biedt zich de laatste gelegenheid aan om Soft Prison in Oudenaarde te bezoeken.

Op de foto: een nieuw werk van Obed Vleugels, een verfijnd prototype van een architecturale constructie die balanceert tussen maquette, sculptuur en verbeeldingsruimte. Het werk nodigt uit tot reflectie over hoe architectuur niet alleen vorm geeft aan onze omgeving, maar ook aan onze dromen en verwachtingen.

In dialoog met het muurwerk van Guillaume Van Moerkercke, die tevens een belangrijke rol speelde in de scenografie van de tentoonstelling, ontstaat een gelaagd samenspel van ruimte, structuur en betekenis.

Samen belichamen de werken de essentie van Soft Prison: een onderzoek naar de subtiele grenzen tussen vrijheid en begrenzing, tussen constructie en verbeelding.

Non è (solo) arte. È relazione.

Il vernissage della Casacon Art Residency è stato uno spazio aperto.
Un dialogo tra artisti, curiosi, amici, addetti ai lavori, abitanti del Conero.
Una sera lenta, calda, vera.

Le opere hanno trovato voce nei racconti, negli sguardi, nelle domande.
E ciò che era nato in silenzio, in studio, ha preso vita tra le persone.

Grazie a chi è passato, ha ascoltato, ha condiviso.
A chi crede che la cultura non sia qualcosa da esporre,
ma qualcosa che si fa insieme.

Casacon è anche questo: un luogo dove l’arte incontra il territorio.
E lascia una traccia.

Non si conoscevano.
Non parlavano la stessa lingua.

We are pleased to announce that Obed Vleugels @obedvleugels is one of the winner of Casacon Residency Prize and has been awarded a place in the prestigious artistic residency at @casaconsirolo , located in the Conero Regional Park.

Born in Heverlee, Belgium, in 1984, Obed Vleugels is a visual artist whose work is characterized by a meticulous focus on the technical aspects of his craft. His practice transforms discarded polyester screenprint mesh into striking canvases, creating a unique visual language that merges graphic design and industrial screenprinting techniques.

Central to his artistic exploration are themes of memory and recollection, which he interprets through a process that values both precision and unpredictability. His work challenges traditional notions of authorship, presenting the artist as a curator or coordinator rather than a sole creator. The resulting pieces reveal a delicate balance between vulnerability and resilience, offering a deeply personal yet universally resonant narrative.

During the two-week residency between March and April 2025, Obed will have the opportunity to further his artistic research in an environment that harmoniously blends nature, art, and wellness. om te beginnen, te zien en te weten
dat iedere traan wordt ontdaan
van verdriet en van wat onderweg werd geleden
door wie ook de weg wilt begaan
de smalle de steile de stillere wegen
ontkleed, en ontlaagd, en ontademd
waarlangs uit het web van zijn sterven tot leven
de vlinder haar vleugels ontrafelt

2. (het lichaam)
om zelfs in de leegte dat licht te bezingen
ten midden van alle lichtledige
te weten dat in deze wereldse schillen
geen mens ooit dat licht kan betreden
dan is toch het lijf maar een tijdelijk oord
om geen hart of geen ziel aan te binden
en spreekt mij een engel de hoop in het woord
hij is niet hier maar hij is wel, te vinden

3. (het zaaisel)
om het ten laatste, niet te verliezen
laat dan toch dat zuinig gespaarde
handjevol hoop door de vingers vergieten
in het zwart van de vruchtbare aarde
waar ik zie dat het sterft maar ik weet dat het slaapt
in de schil van de dood tot de nacht
ontsterft, ontvouwt, en ten laatste onwaakt
tot een licht dat geen mens heeft bedacht by @obedvleugels
