SPECIMEN: An Ìgbò Artifact.
NAME: Táà nà Gbóó
SCULPTOR: @woodsworthinterior
YEAR: 2024.

I have always wondered why we have to go to Europe to take back our stolen artifacts when we, the children of the original makers, can make more and use it to make as much money as is being made in Europe. These talents are originally ours and have been definitely handed down to us.

I have always been on the look out for an Ìgbò art work that would catch my fancy. Like, the one that would give me a mind blowing meaning.

I saw this work and it caught my attention, immediately. The sculptor named it "Òdógwú" but to me, there is more depth. I named it "Táà nà Gbóó" which means "Modern and Ancient".

This work illustrates a head of an Ìchíè. An Ìchíè is a titled man in Ìgbò tradition who belongs to the "Nzè nà Ọ́zọ" aristocracy. They are noble men with influnce who settle disputes within and for their communities. Ndị́ é jì mmézí márá.

In this work, you would notice that this man has the modern day high red cap symbolic of a present day ìchíè, with two feathers to it which shows double honors (one for his title and one for another feat). The red cap makes it a modern representation - Táà.

Taking a closer look at his forehead, you would notice some marks by the left, under his cap. That is called 'Íchí', a scarification used prior to the red cap as a symbol that one is an Ìchíè. During this period, the feathers (ábụ́ba ùgò - ítúrú ùgò) was also in use. That makes it an ancient representation - Gbóó.

I love this work and I got it from a state I have observed to be the most artistic state in Ìgbò land - Enugwu.

Beautiful work. Imagine the brown part being real bronze and the gold paints being real gold pieces.

Sitting magnificently in my office!
