Currently spinning the @roughtrade shops bonus CD which was his 41 minute minimal work-out of ‘Little Drummer Boy’ which is well worth the £15.99 week of release price of entry alone.

Very jetlagged listen to an all time fave ‘Red’ by @kingcrimsonhq @robertfrippofficial
An astonishing album in a tightened 3 piece of Fripp, Bruford and Wetton post-tour fall outs, augmented by killer sax… The first heavier leaning side is awesome - riffy opening leading to beautiful lines like ‘tears of joy at the birth of a brother; never alone from that time’, but it’s the second side that transcends all- ‘Providence’ shaped from a live recording of the prior line up, collapsing like a star into the deep all-timer of ‘Starless’ - one of the greatest in the genre, or any genre… magical guitar that tricks time in a melodious comforting gift amongst expansions on the futility of all and existential dread in this epic universe…. It’s a real one. This is the 1989 Fripp overseen remaster which I hear is even better than the first pressing on modern systems.

A rare upgrade from my well-loved CD version of @pixiesofficial ‘Bossanova’ new @dinkededition on @4ad
Will always have a soft spot for this album as was the first of theirs I bought - I remember standing in Our Price in Brentwood tossing up between this or the twofer of come on…/surfer… and many would say (including me when taped off a friend later) I made the wrong choice.. but repeated intense listens as was they way with saving up for 💿 pre streaming made for pure love. With Kim joining late after making that perfect first Breeders LP, and following up the one that everyone loves, the angle is often that this was more direct and commercial but really it’s a UFO abduction concept album that opens with a surf instrumental, flies into ‘rock music’ maybe their hardest moment and then the abstract ‘’Velouria’… so many favourites here with ‘Is She Weird’, ‘All Over the World’, ‘Blown Away’… all the grime and tension of the first albums are there, the narrator is just in the desert looking up at the stars and flying saucers. This one has a bonus 7”
Including the fabled Steve Albini version of ‘Dig For Fire’…. Death to the Pixies! 🧚

The final LP in the ‘Ambient’ series from @brianeno with darker undertones than most in the series providing and incredible sonic landscape for beautiful but unsettled thoughts to linger. Using re-looped pieces from back at the start of the series, minimal synth works and in a theme kept alive from his important work with @earthpercent recordings of various wildlife, this is a real one to settle into. There’s even an economical 3-speaker suggestion on the back cover for opening out the soundstage further and, again pioneering the vertical video format we all seem to have adopted decades later, he made a series of films to accompany it. I love my copy of this album, bought second hand years ago for £4, and with a prior life of borrowing from Tower Hamlets libraries, the additional crackles and scratches from a long loved disk give a romance of the magical aural spaces that this ‘free to borrow’ LP could have conjured in so many rooms, and at this instant, my own….

Always an absolute treat to get anything from @thecharlottefield and this just dropped ‘the ended year’. 4-track demos from 2005 pre- ‘what are friends for’… blown out vocals and hollow bodied base weaving through vhs and tascam noise and that snake like menace apparent that made them one of the greats. This labour of love is one of IDK 20ish hand dubbed repurposed cassette tapes each with a unique sleeve…. There’s a couple left on their @bandcamp I think and I definitely would. Some ‘second rate Miles Davis’… here from @zappa with his incredible jazz/rock fusion ‘Waka/Jawaka’ taking the Hot Rats guitar radness (I mean the solo on ‘Big Swifty’ is like a liquid reformation of what that instrument can do) to the big-band… this is a great gateway Zappa LP I always think, with ‘thanks to Bob Moog & Co for the use of their new frequency shifter’ and moments seemingly played backwards in real time. Reading @robgmacfarlane and listening to the moth-centric double EP from @cocteauofficial
Originally recordings to test a new studio set up, the band decided to release the output as two EPs ‘Tiny Dynamite’ and ‘Echoes in a Shallow Bay’, a week apart from each other with the complementary artwork from @4ad unifying them… this is a UK first pressing of the former and Shallow Bay I’m digging into from the great reissues a while back. It’s incredible how prolific this band was over such a short period - this followed Treasure in ‘84, another single in ‘85 and then the two founders returned with a full album in ‘86 whilst @mrsimonraymonde was busy constructing full other albums with Ivo in This Mortal Coil… and the quality of all is staggering. ‘Pink Orange Red’ and ‘Pink Tiger’ are great gateways to this incredible group….

Friday feels with one of my favourite @fabiofrizzi scores - for Lucio Fulci’s ‘The Beyond’… following the mad international success of Zombi2 aka ‘Zombie Flesh Eaters’ and the grindhouse / video nasty market ‘The Beyond’ pushed things, well, Beyond… a fever dream with nods to his Giallo past, massive supernatural elements and eye-popping gore in abundance. It’s an incredibly fun movie. Unless you’re arachnophobic. And the score is wild.. dramatic piano gothic hints, wild choral incantations, mellotron heft, a smattering of funk grooves…. It’s absolutely wild. Fuller orchestral moments and tight band propulsion. Iconic. This is a glorious @deathwaltzrecs @spencerhickmanvinyls release with art from the legendary @humphreys7120 who did so many VHS delights and on their subscriber variant which is like a 50/50 double green splatter vinyl mirroring the cover tones… iconic release. #vinylsoundtrack #vinylcollection #catsandvinyl #33rpm #recordcollection by @obispicks

Just me and Obi tonight which means listening to Come ‘Don’t Ask Don’t Tell’ at a bracing volume…. This was one of those bands that I grabbed a second generation tape of from a friend, piecing together shards of info from their Nirvana support to a member also being in Codeine… this second album was touted for greatness and delivers on a clear - post - Grunge downer… extended blues contortions hitting SY/post rock touch points and a raggedly intense vocal performance of pure Emo-core…. It’s a radically powerful listen from intense no-let up opener ‘finish line’ onwards… this is the re-issue with their Sub Pop singles club goodies and some Swell Map cover action too…. Settling into the evening with ‘Mwng’ from @superfurryanimals
A favourite album of mine in a discography of favourites… this one followed Guerrilla which was one of their first (of two) big-budget attempts at ‘pop’ and is honestly better than pretty much every Beach Boys album, but after a lack of radio support didn’t make the hits, um, hit and their label, the astonishing Creation closing they decided to go on ‘Pop strike’, not worry about the radio and record a Welsh language album on a £6k budget…. And releasing it on their own ‘Placid Casual’ label delivered the highest charting, biggest selling album in the language to date.. and it’s beautiful! ‘ymwelodi a’r ymylon’ ‘nythod cacwn’ and ‘mawrth oer ar y blaned neifion’ are amongst their most melodically beautiful works and the whole thing hangs together in a live, personal, beautifully dark fashion…. One of the best to ever to it… and recently performed live which is still on @bbciplayer (thanks for the heads up @davidwrenchmusic )

‘Chasing the Godrays and counting the Cat’s Eyes’ with @mysteryjets masterful new album ‘A Hole To See the Sky Through’… this is the @dinkededition with the @yokoono inspired artwork…
It’s no secret this band are dear friends and one of my favourites, constantly pushing forwards into the romance and open hearted power of music and song… and this album sees them opening out into clearer Aztec Camera style song clarity, whilst re-embracing the proggier tendencies of their early work…. Stuck rotating on the earth looking out into the sky and seeking answers to the big questions. From the romantic opening (and closing) title track, to the burst of Throbbing Gristle noise of ‘Black Sage’ where @kapil_triv gets to fly… side B leans into blue eyed soul with ‘Soul River’ reaching to the beyond to a life taken too soon and @instagram_parsonz delivering one helluva vocal performance. Hi-fi production a cut above from @leoabrahams who seems to have given the whole thing a lightness of touch… I mean what a band! #indievinyl #vinylcollection #vinyladdict #catsandvinyl #catsandrecords by @obispicks

‘Hairway to Stephen’ from Butthole Surfers… their last indie LP for a while represented here on a first UK pressing on Blast First/Mute via @touchandgorecords
This one’s a great marker of a band making that transitional leap with tape edits and own studio trickery but also going in with actual songs and material… the path to sort who gets in to the more psychedelic and acoustic centric is the opener ‘Jimi’ opening the LP with a 12 min sinister dark child-based fantasy and hard blues riffage, before the waking dream emerges from the acid nightmare with a sample of bowling pins falling as percussion and acoustic guitar flourishes into a clear day. I say ‘Jimi’ but all the song titles here are fan guesstimates, with the label further messing with with ‘Zep spoonerism only featuring explicit doodled images for each track.
