The phenomenal Indian Theater: Native Performance, Art, and Self-Determination since 1969 curated by @candicebhopkins at @sitesantafe. Hosting curator @brandeecaoba. A must-see exhibition!

Not pictured: Artifacts Piece, Revisited , a reinterpretation of James Luna's Artifact Piece (1987), by @ericalord

Indian Theater: Native Performance, Art, and Self-Determination since 1969 is the first major exhibition to center performance as an origin point for the development of contemporary art by Native artists. Far-ranging in scope and perspectives, the exhibition features artists of Native American, Alaska Native, First Nations, Métis, and Inuit backgrounds. Indian Theater traces the history of artistic experimentation that emerged in the late 1960s, a rich period of creativity that was expressed through political action, critical engagement with existing Native aesthetic practices, and a profound reconsideration of identity—all of which led to a renewed era of self-determination that continues to inform Native artists today. taken in SITE SANTA FE by @object_choice

Fun day nerding out at the George Eastman Museum in Rochester, NY. I was particularly taken by Kodak's Lunar Orbiter photographic subsystem, the Coquette 1930s ladies camera with matching Art Deco lipstick case and powder compact, and the wall of powdered synthetic dye samples collected by Technicolor Corporation (3037 in the collection and half on display!)

About the Kunar Orbiter subsystem Slide 1:
"Kodak created a photographic subsystem that included 65mm film for image capture, two lenses, onboard film processing using the Kodak Bimat process to eliminate the use of wet chemicals, and a scanner and video system. Once the photographs were taken, the film was processed and scanned, and the negative images were transmitted as analog video to receiving stations on Earth. The images were then written back to film and shipped to Kodak in Rochester for final reconstruction. In total, Kodak built eight subsystems, five of which made one-way trips aboard Orbiter spacecraft in 1966 and 1967."

The one, the only Gretchen Bender @spruethmagers

I was thrilled to finally see her thirteen-monitor "electronic theatre" piece Dumping Core on the West Coast. In all her work, Bender was a keen observer of the mass media's ability to absorb and neutralize horrific images of violence.

I was also thrilled to learn about her collaboration with Amber Denker, CalArts alum and pioneer of early digital imaging and computer animation.

Thanks to Claire de Dobay Rifelj for the tour!

Stunning presentation of Alicja Kwade & Agnes Martin,
Space Between the Lines, at Pace in LA. It was difficult to capture the more absurd works by Kwade sprinkled throughout the gallery (LA marble snow aside). Pace image of The Sun, a yellow mellon sculpture on the ceiling, included.

While researching my Ph.D., I lived for six months in Santiago, Chile, where I regularly visited the Museo de la Solidaridad Salvador Allende (MSSA, Museum of Solidarity Salvador Allende). This unique institution was founded in 1971 with a global call for donations of art to be presented in solidarity with the new socialist government of Salvador Allende and the Chilean people.

With Frank Stella’s recent passing, and contemporary calls for transnational solidarity with Palestine, I am reminded me of the first time I walked into the museum. To my surprise, Stella’s painting Isfahan III (1968) from his Protractor series was one of the centerpieces on the first floor. Stella donated this painting in 1972 to the museum (then called Museo de la Solidaridad).

Stella’s donation stands as a reminder of the importance of transnational solidarity in the ongoing struggle for justice and peace worldwide today.

It is worth noting that over half a million people of Palestinian descent live in Chile, the largest diaspora outside of the Middle East. Chile has recognized Palestine as a state since 2011.

More on the storied history and recent restoration of Stella's painting can be found at https://www.mssa.cl/stella-project/.
