I kind of love this trend, mostly because I have an absolute treasure trove of baby photos that I adore, taken mostly by my late dad, but also because it actually reminds me that little Julya would have been so stoked to know how things would turn out. I feel so lucky to have assembled this life where I get to hang out with plants, fungi, artists, and other creative beings pretty much every day. Should have seen it coming, I guess! 🥹

Heading into 2024 with some pretty big news…
The Alfresco Science Machine and I have travelled a long way since I first started this project in 2017. From the west coast to the east coast of Canada, through rainforest, boreal forest, and Carolinian swamp forest. From the ocean, to the mountains, and across the prairies. And now in January 2024 you will find this work in National Geographic Magazine. To say I’m thrilled would be the understatement of the year. It’s such an honour to have my work published among so many incredibly talented photographers, to find myself in the company of those who dedicate their careers to sharing the incredible wonders of the natural world with readers around the globe, and the importance of doing everything we can to take care of all the living things that we share this planet with. I hope you all have the chance to go out and hug a tree over the holidays, and while you’re at it, hunker down and take a closer look at all the extraordinary lichens, mosses, fungi and other charismatic microfauna that are out there too. 🌲🍄🌱✨💚

Special thanks to @calgaryartsdev and the @afa.1991 for funding various stages of the project, allowing me to pursue this work to my heart’s content, and to @hickswogan for his beautifully crafted words that accompany my photos in the magazine.

Happy Earth Day, and hello to all the new faces around here! I created this virtual studio visit in the lead-up to the Artist Project art fair that took place last weekend, so in case you missed it, here is an intro to the work that I do out in the field 🌲✨💚
I have some exciting travels coming up this year, so follow along here, or you can also sign up for my newsletter that goes out a few times a year to hear about upcoming exhibitions, new work, and the adventures of @alfrescosciencemachine
Hope you have the chance to go outside and hug a tree (shrub, moss, flower, mushroom, etc) today!! ✨🌎✨

Huge thank you to the very talented @stephaniejager for travelling along with the Alfresco Science Machine and I to film all this on Southern Vancouver Island last spring, and for putting this video together. It’s really just a little teaser of a longer piece we are working on, so stay tuned for more!

Showing some new work at @accessgallery in the group exhibition ‘Making Kin at the End of the World’ ✨ ‘Dogwood watching the riverbank’ is a solargraph I made in July as part of @the_new_gallery ‘s Current residency, where I installed a series of multi aperture pinhole cameras, with Dogwood-inspired pinhole arrays, along the Bow River to expose for a month - a snapshot in tree-time. The show opens in Vancouver this Wednesday the 15th! taken in Access Gallery by @obscuralucida

Fall blooms 🖤 ✨ These were collected to make a series of phytolumens and then left to continue on through this exquisite transformation. Swipe through for the details 🧐 (deceased moth gathered and saved for me by my friend Jim at @empireofdirtresidency ) by @obscuralucida

The Multi-Being Camera
Julya Hajnoczky (@obscuralucida ), Dogwood, Banana Slug, Pincushion Sunburst Lichen et al

“The only true voyage of discovery . . . would be not to visit strange lands, but to possess other eyes, to behold the universe through the eyes of another, of a hundred others, to behold the hundred universes that each of them beholds, that each of them is.”
	- Marcel Proust

Imagine stepping into the shoes (wings, paws, leaves, antennae) of our more-than-human neighbours. By building multi-apertured, multi-perspectival pinhole cameras, soaking the film in a soup of forest cast-offs before processing, and presenting the photos as kaleidoscopic assemblages, I invite the viewer to immerse themselves in the possibility of other perceptual worlds.

On view through tomorrow, July 16th! taken in Emily Carr University of Art + Design by @obscuralucida

Meet the Artist: Julya Hajnoczky (@obscuralucida )

In The Multi-Being Camera project, Julya Hajnoczky works with analog photographic processes to speculate on the umwelt, or unique perceptual worlds, of our more-than-human kin, developing m methodologies that support relational co-creation with plants, animals and fungi. By building unconventional, multi-perspectival pinhole cameras inspired by Dogwood, Banana Slug, and Pin-cushion Sunburst Lichen, and incorporating plant materials into the darkroom process, she opens her work to the influence of these more-than-human contributors. The resulting photographs, recombined into sprawling organic assemblages, are an invitation to step into the possibility of other ways of being, of seeing, in the world.

Her research examines approaches to living well within our deep ecosystemic entanglements. Seeking ways of countering Capitalocene narratives that reduce plants and animals to mere resources, her central concern is creating work that closes the empathy gap by inviting viewers to imagine stepping into the shoes (wings, paws, leaves, antennae) of other beings. The work gestures toward this multitude of more-than-human existences, so that we may begin to grasp that we have been living in our own subjective worlds. In these encounters, we can ask ourselves “what’s it like to be you?” By attending closely to the answers, perhaps we can move beyondunderstanding, and towards making kin with these living beings.

Spent some time in the rain (and mud) this afternoon installing a series of multi-aperture pinhole cameras around Prince’s Island as part of Current: Process + Place, organized by @the_new_gallery , exploring human and non-human connections to the River, and how we can make our singular and shared histories visible.
These will be in place till the end of July, at which point I will go and hopefully be able to retrieve them all! We’ll see what kind of magical solargraphs these produce.
The aperture array on these cameras is modeled on a spray of berries on Dogwood, who grows in abundance in the wetland area at the eastern end of the island. Dogwood is a good neighbour, helping prevent erosion by putting down roots that stabilize the soil. Birds shelter and nest among their branches. Dogwood extends their berries, leaves, twigs and roots out to meet birds, deer, moose, insects and fungi; sites of exchange, meeting, connection. 🌿✨
There are lots of great installations and events happening as part of this programming, curated by Bridgette Badowich. by @obscuralucida
