You thought this stayed in Anaheim? Think again 🫥 These license plate readers don’t stop at city limits. Data (will most likely) be accessed and shared across agencies throughout Orange County. 📸🚘Here’s what’s wild:Anaheim is only directly funding ONLY 11 of the 72 cameras.The rest? Taxpayer money ( of course) 😜So even if you don’t live in Anaheim…you’re still part of the system being built. And yes — some of that funding traces back to federal programs under the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Different programs, same department, but this is a little too close for comfort.This isn’t just about one city anymore. It’s about how far this network can go — and who has access OUR DATA for simply stepping outside and how that puts already marginalized communities at greater risk - without their voice,,without their consent. @mayorprotemmanuelchavez says he voted to keep Costa Mesa’s Flock contract because he believes the cameras have helped solve heinous crimes and bring peace to families who have lost loved ones.But he also acknowledged residents’ concerns about living in a surveillance state—and admitted he is “very uncomfortable” with the fact that 170 people have access to Flock in Costa Mesa.His position? Keep the contract for now, try to address the concerns, and cancel it if Flock refuses to make changes.But that raises a bigger question: How much surveillance is too much? And how do we make sure residents have a meaningful voice in decisions that impact our privacy and our communities?We’re glad these questions are being asked. The community showed up, the meeting was heavily attended, and as Mayor John Stephens said, the public comments were virtually 100% in opposition.These conversations matter—and so does knowing what the people representing your community are saying and how they’re voting. @cityofcostamesa Mayor John Stephens said he has never seen an issue where virtually 100% of public commenters shared the same position!That position was clear: cancel Flock.He acknowledged that residents’ trust in the police department has been harmed, questioned why the original contract was not publicly discussed, and noted that it came in just below the threshold requiring public review.Then he voted to keep Flock…..Listening to the community means more than recognizing their unanimous opposition. Costa Mesa residents made it clear: we do not want Flock surveillance in our city.Over 100 community members, advocates, and local leaders showed up and spoke with one voice: cancel the Flock contract. But the City Council voted 6–1 to keep Flock, choosing small contract changes over what the public actually demanded.Councilwoman Arlis Reynolds was the only vote to cancel the contract. She also raised important questions about how the original agreement was approved without real community discussion. Because the first contract came in under $100,000, it avoided the public disclosure and comment process that larger contracts require.That may be the process—but it is not transparency. And it is not how decisions that impact our privacy, safety, and neighborhoods should be made.We’re grateful for Councilwoman Reynolds for standing with the community, and proud of every person who showed up, spoke out, and refused to be ignored.Our safety does not come from more surveillance. It comes from investing in our communities, our youth, housing, care, and the things people actually need.The people have spoken. Important Public Charge update: A new rule takes effect September 18 and applies only to applications filed on or after that date. Applications already pending or filed before then follow the current rule.Public Charge applies only to certain visa applications and some family- or employment-based green card applications. When Anaheim expanded its Automatic License Plate Reader (ALPR) camera program, the overwhelming majority of public comments opposed the expansion. Since that vote, residents have received little to no public updates from the City or Anaheim PD about how this surveillance program is being implemented.Transparency shouldn’t end after a vote.Many Anaheim residents can’t attend City Council meetings because they’re working, caring for family, or juggling other responsibilities. That’s why the City has a responsibility to communicate major decisions through its website and social media—not keep residents in the dark.Our community deserves:📍 Regular public updates on the ALPR program📍 Transparency about implementation📍 Meaningful opportunities for continued public engagementWe’ve already seen AI-powered technologies disproportionately impact marginalized communities. Since April, Anaheim City Council has quietly approved automatic license plate reader cameras for our community — and they still haven’t said a word. 🚨 No announcement. No update. Not one post from the council or on the City of Anaheim’s website. Local organizations like @chispa.oc @occord_ @ocrrn showed up to City Council to speak out against it, and have been reporting on it ever since. The ACLU has already flagged these cameras as a violation of our 4th Amendment rights.Help us get this out. STILL fighting for justice for Albert Arzola. 🕯️Albert’s Aunt, Christine, stood before @city_of_anaheim with one message: take Nathan Garcia OFF payroll. Hold him accountable — Chief Manny Cid (@chiefcid_apd ), hold him accountable — Anaheim City Council. And release ALL the body camera footage!The Arzola family has shown up to council since December 2025. It took nearly 5 MONTHS…. of relentless pressure just to get the officer’s name released — April 2026. That same week, Garcia quietly settled a lawsuit for brutalizing another minor — a 14-year-old, unarmed, in 2024.This is not an isolated incident. This is a pattern.
