We made the news! šŸŽ„

Thank you to KMOV 4 News for giving us the chance to share our love for St. Louis and our vision for what its vacant spaces can become.

A vacant lot is not the end of a story. It can be where a new one begins.

Through Occupy Vacancy, we’re reimagining neighborhood development through an artist’s lens—creating space for art, gathering, and connection.

Watch the full feature at the link in our bio, then come see the work for yourself!

šŸ“¢ We’re planting a sculpture park and we’d love your help!

For the past few months, we’ve been designing our newest installment of Occupy Vacancy, and next Saturday we finally get to bring it to life.

We’ll be planting hundreds of Missouri native perennials to transform the next vacant lot into a living sculpture park as part of @counterpublic’s Coyote Time exhibition.

All experience is welcomed! Come get your hands dirty, meet some great people, and help create something that will be here for years to come.

šŸ—“ Saturday, August 8
ā° 8:00–11:00 AM
šŸ“ 4012 Enright Ave., St. Louis, MO 63108

🧤 Gloves, tools, snacks, and drinks are all provided.

Bring a friend, wear clothes you don’t mind getting a little dirty, and come help us make something beautiful. šŸ’›

We can’t wait to see you there! by @occupyvacancy

Occupy Vacancy works at the intersection of art, activism, and land stewardship. Our mission is to restore narrative to neighborhoods through public art installations that reflect on St. Louis’s brick architecture and the presence—and absence—of the homes and stories that once stood there.

Our site serves as an ongoing invitation to engage with the history, resilience, and future of North St. Louis.

Happy Juneteenth.

Get to know Occupy Vacancy, a local public art initiative included in Counterpublic 2026: Coyote Time.

Occupy Vacancy is a public art initiative co-founded by St. Louis–born artists Brianna McIntyre and André Fuqua. Grounded in human-centered community development, the project reshapes the physical landscape of St. Louis City by transforming vacant, city-owned lots into vibrant third places for neighborhood-specific public art. Through sculpture and spatial design, Occupy Vacancy responds to the layered histories of race, architecture, and legacy that shape St. Louis’s Northside.

Brianna McIntyre @briannabybrianna is a visual and installation artist, interior architect, furniture designer, and Creative Director of Occupy Vacancy. Her practice engages narratives related to place and home, invisible women-centered labor, race, and the politicized performance of beauty imposed on Black women.

André Fuqua @andrefuqua_ is an interdisciplinary artist and Design Engineer of Occupy Vacancy. Trained as a civil engineer and materials scientist, his work bridges sculpture and infrastructure, examining how visibility shapes power and perspective within both natural and built environments.

Occupy Vacancy’s commission is curated by Executive + Artistic Director James McAnally @jamesxmcanally and Assistant Curator Charlie Farrell @artfullythought

@counterpublic brings Coyote Time to St. Louis this fall. Experience our Triennial exhibition from September 12–December 12, 2026.

2024 Recap! As this year wraps up, our hearts are full with gratitude and pride. Every opportunity to amplify our mission has been a blessing, and we don’t take it for granted.

Here are a few milestones from 2024 that we are celebrating:

- Our artist talk at @ SLAM: A dream come true for two art school kids from STL!

- Our first gallery exhibition at @ IvesterContemporary in Austin, TX: Thank you, Texas community, for showing love!

- Becoming landscape designers for Rite of Location: We cleared the overgrown trees and prepped land for spring planting. Special thanks to Tom and SPF Landscaping.

- Grant support from @ stlartsRAC and STL Vacancy Collaborative: Your belief in our mission fuels everything we do.

Our community is the heart of our work, and we’re endlessly grateful for the way you show up, share, and reimagine with us. Here’s to more growth, more creativity, and more transformation in 2025. Keep rocking with us, always!

With love and gratitude,

These Occupy Vacancy Handmade Bricks are not only beautiful objects, but imbedded with deep story telling.
.
The OV brick, crafted by Occupy Vacancy, pays homage to ancestral artisanship and early 20th-century brickmaking traditions. Historically, brickmakers stamped their creations to mark quality, origin, and ownership. In this spirit, the artists meticulously crafted the OV brick from reclaimed materials—including bricks from abandoned St. Louis homes, European clay, marble dust, and Central Texas soils. This reimagined stamped brick fuses historical character with forward-thinking design, introducing a new architectural language that reconceptualizes St. Louis’s urban landscape.
