Let’s dive into feather stars 🌟 your ocean education

These guys are amazing, they are part of the class Crinoidea which also includes sea lillies.

This class has been found to of been around 300 million years before the dinosaurs 🦖 according to fossil records and the fossils of these guys are actually being used to provide more evidence about our underwater world!

They use their limbs to move through the water column and eat microscopic organisms.

They tend to have stalks to attach to the seafloor as younger versions and then are able to move like this! The ones that loose the stalks are the feather stars and the ones that keep their stalks are known as sea lilies.

They are rarely seen moving like this, so it’s amazing to be able to watch them and share this.

This is one of my favourite moments on a dive, watching the turtle come back down to 20+ meters after taking some much needed oxygen intake on the surface.

Did you know turtles can stay submerged for several hours underwater whilst resting due to processes to conserve oxygen but when foraging, they tend to go to the surface to breathe much more often as they utilise the energy for movement and eating.

This is why it’s so important never to crowd, chase or block a sea turtles path especially when it’s nearing the surface, you could put stress on the turtle and oxygen levels can plummet, they need oxygen from the surface.

Sadly our highly migratory species (like the Blue shark above) suffer a lot of depletion due to passing through so many different waters, under different policies and frameworks and subject to bycatch and overfishing along the way. 🎣

It’s really never simple in marine conservation and shark science, but I’m hoping this video raises awareness generally of this species without it being too complex.

Scuba diving honestly changed my life but I’m lucky to be able to do this and don’t take this for granted, it is luckily becoming more accessible but at the same time it’s not for everyone, if you’re able, definitely give it a go! 🐚🤿🤙🏼

Sharing my illustrated Ocean Bingo with you! 🌊 🤿🤙🏼
Cross off the species you find with your dive buddies, what could a row or a house mean to you and your buddies? A mango shake? 🥭 Lunch at the dive restaurant? 🥙 A post dive beer? 🍺 A free dive? 🤿

I made these for myself and my buddy when visiting Malta, Egypt, Phillipines, UK and the Maldives so I have them for each of those so far with more to come!

You can do them by dive site, by dive location? Reset them after each dive? For the competitive diver out there! 🤣🤣🤣

I printed these myself from the electronic version however to be more sustainable they are available electronically as a PDF through my Etsy (link 🔗 in my bio) pay once and you can use it on multiple dives and sites across your trip or print yourself at home or at a printing shop! Easy to send to your buddies too!

If dive organisations or companies want to bulk buy them printed and delivered or purchase them commercially, I can also have this arranged so DM me.

I illustrated these based on my dives and species I love and want to see! 🦈🤞🏼 I’ve been lucky to tick off quite a few!

Let’s talk NUDIBRANCH! Super cute and like playing Pokémon Go! How many can you spot 👀?

Some key words and topics to research into could include Nudibranchs stealing toxins, “solar powered sea slugs” and Kleptoplasty!

I honestly recommend you deep dive into Kleptoplasty as it’s super interesting.

Don’t forget to sign up to local rock pool events near you, the @therockpoolproject is my go to in the UK and you never know if you will find a Nudibranch! 🥹🤭

Someone give the last photo a name? 🤭 Malta & Gozo has so much cool marine life if you take time to look for it…

It’s always good to appreciate and love the small stuff, especially somewhere that doesn’t tend to get a lot of large pelagics or have dense coral reef.

A reminder to slow down and look around 🤿
