🚨UPDATE 9/18/2026: Great news! The EEL program has secured $20 million for FY 2026-27. We thank the commissioners for recognizing the value of the EEL program and the urgency at which it needs funding. In particular, we thank Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, Commissioner Danielle Cohen-Higgins, and Commissioner Raquel Regalado. To our audience and supporters, thank YOU for speaking up and advocating for what’s left of wild Miami.

The Environmentally Endangered Lands (EEL) Program manages and restores 29,000+ acres of natural spaces in Miami-Dade County.

This program protects some of Miami-Dade County’s last remaining natural areas—places that provide wildlife habitat, support our drinking water, and make our communities more resilient to flooding and storms.

EEL funding has declined dramatically (37%-54%) in just the last two years. When funding falls short, Miami-Dade loses opportunities to protect these lands. Property prices rise, development continues, and once these natural areas are gone, we can’t get them back.

Dozens of organizations, including Miami Waterkeeper, are asking the Board of County Commissioners to restore EEL funding to $20 million for FY 2026-27.

Mammals disappearing from the Everglades isn’t only because of Burmese Pythons. The US Gov flooding & slowly degrading the tree islands (some of the only dry land in the Everglades) severely impacted mammal populations in the Everglades.

History: During the genocide known as the Seminole Wars & Trail of Tears, the U.S. Government violently enforced the “Indian Removal Act.” Miccosukee and Seminole people sought refuge on these tree islands deep in the everglades. Their knowledge of the land allowed them to thrive while US soldiers suffered from mosquito bites trying to penetrate the thick wetland. The Miccosukee never surrendered.
The Everglades kept the Miccosukee safe.
Over the past 100 years the US Gov drained, polluted, and developed the everglades. Unable to live off the land anymore, the Miccosukee people were forced once again to move from the tree islands onto villages called camps in a reservation on Tamiami Trail (8th street).
