The Scrawled Filefish can be found in the tropical waters of the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific oceans. It can be spotted on coral reefs, seaweed fields or in the open ocean. With an omnivorous diet that includes crustaceans, algae, sea anemones, fire coral, seagrasses and hydrozoans it is safe to say that it will not go hungry. These two fish attached to this Nurse Shark are Whitefin Suckerfish. These fish are part of the Remora family. They will attach themselves to bigger fish such as sharks, rays, turtles, etc and will benefit in the form of a free ride and protection, and take advantage of some food scraps; however, they may also feed off skin parasites from the host. How beautiful is this Queen Angelfish? I don’t see them very often and they are very shy and tend to swim away from people. On our last snorkeling adventure, I was lucky enough to see three of these and even got this halfway decent footage to share with you. The prominent feature of this fish is the round shaped spot on its forehead that would be the “queen’s crown”. The Glasseye Snapper is easily identified by its big eyes, red body and silver bars on its back. This fish is a member of the Bigeyes family and not the Snappers family as the name might suggest. They are usually solitary and do not school. The majestic Spotted Eagle Rays! One of my favorite underwater creatures. They are so elegant as they effortlessly glide through the water column. These rays are usually solitary but can sometimes be found in groups of up to 6 individuals. Very rarely will they school in bigger groups. They like to swim over sandy areas in search for food. Their favorites are mollusks, such as the Queen Conch, but they will also eat crabs, shrimp, octopus and fish. Spotted Eagle Rays are ovoviviparous, meaning that the eggs will hatch inside the mother and live mini versions of herself will be born. These rays can be identified by their black top with white spots and white underside and a prominent head. At the base of their tail, we can find between 1 and 5 poisonous stingers used for defense against predators. Here in the Turks and Caicos Islands we see them more often during the winter months. However, when I used to live in the Cayman Islands, the summer months usually provided most sightings.
