If you’re new here, I live a little old-school—because I believe in doing things myself.
This is modern self-sufficiency and I want to share this old new way with you! 🤍🫶

- Grow most of our own organic food
- Can and preserve enough for winter
- Make food from scratch
- Forage for remedies
- Make herbal tinctures and salves
- Craft my own home & body care products

- Self-employed both my husband and myself
- Save seeds from our best plants
- Mend clothes and fix things before replacing them
- Harvest rainwater and compost
- Practice prevention instead of waiting for problems
- Trust my God given inner compass
- Learn new skills like it’s my job

This is your friendly reminder to get some chickens or support your local egg farmer.

Lab made eggs are now on the market and sold in food products in the US. 🤢

They don’t even need to be labelled as fake eggs made in labs. So if you’ve been on the fence, I think it’s time to start making your own food from scratch with real food from real gardens and real animals.

What do you think? Would you eat eggs made without chickens?

It’s that time of year when there’s something from the garden to preserve almost every day!

Today’s little experiment was a success! I roasted eggplant and added it to my fresh tomato sauce. Eggplant acts like a little sponge, absorbing moisture and flavour, and giving the sauce a naturally thick, rich texture without having to simmer the tomatoes for hours.

Common Winter Squash to Grow for Self-Sufficiency:
1. Butternut – Sweet, versatile, and excellent for long-term storage.
2. Acorn – Compact, easy to grow, and perfect for roasting.
3. Spaghetti – Great pasta alternative and stores well.
4. Delicata – Sweet, thin edible skin, and easy to prepare.
5. Hubbard – Large, productive, and excellent for winter storage.
6. Kabocha – Rich, nutty flavour with dense, sweet flesh.
7. Buttercup – Sweet, creamy flesh and good storage potential.
8. Sugar Pumpkin – Great for pies, soups, baking, and purées.

For winter storage: Butternut, Hubbard, and Kabocha are especially good choices. Delicata and acorn squash generally have shorter storage lives.

Cranberries… for Thanksgiving and beyond! 🚀😂

Homemade cranberry sauce is so easy to make, and I always can a few extra jars for the pantry!
As we know it’s great with turkey, but we use it throughout the winter with roasted meats, sandwiches and baked brie/cheeses.

Homemade Cranberry Sauce Recipe:

* 3 lbs fresh cranberries
* 1 cup cane sugar
* 3 cups filtered water
* Zest and juice of 1 orange
* Zest and juice of 1 lemon

Rinse the cranberries and add everything to a large pot. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 10–15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the berries burst and the sauce thickens.

Quick Water-Bath Canning Instructions
1. Ladle hot cranberry sauce into clean, hot canning jars, leaving ½ inch headspace.
2. Remove air bubbles, wipe rims, and secure lids fingertip-tight.
3. Place jars in a boiling water canner, covered by at least 1 inch of water.
4. Process for 15 minutes
5. Remove jars and cool undisturbed for 12–24 hours. 6. Check seals, label, and store in a cool, dark pantry.

Who’s making their own cranberry sauce this Thanksgiving? 🍁

Good organic, non-GMO apples don’t need added sugar or peeling for apple sauce. 💁‍♀️

They just need a few simple ingredients to make the flavour pop: a splash of apple cider vinegar, lemon juice and yummy cinnamon.
I promise, you won’t taste the ACV or lemon juice. The apples just taste more like apples, with a little extra warmth from the cinnamon.

5 lb Naturally Sweet Apple Sauce Recipe
🍎 5 lbs organic, non-GMO apples, cored and chopped
🍎 ½ cup filtered water
🍎 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
🍎 1 tbsp + 1 tsp lemon juice
🍎 2 teaspoons cinnamon

Add the apples and water to a large pot. Cover and cook over medium-low heat until the apples are soft, stirring occasionally.

Blend until smooth, then stir in the apple cider vinegar, lemon juice, and cinnamon. Taste and adjust the cinnamon if needed.

Ladle into jars, leaving the appropriate headspace, and process according to your tested canning method.

I can mine in two oddly specific sizes:
🍎 little snack jars
🍎 exactly 2 cups for my muffin recipe
Because canning ingredients in the amounts you actually use!

You might be walking past free food (my favourite kind🌰🤭) without even realizing it!

Once I started learning how to identify nut trees, I began noticing them everywhere on my walks…. hazelnuts, walnuts and even chestnuts in some areas around the Okanagan.

Nut season is surprisingly easy to miss. If you don’t know what the tree looks like, when the nuts are ready, or what you’re actually looking for on the ground… you can walk right past them!

In my Nut Foraging Guide, I’m sharing how to identify common nut trees, when and how to harvest them, how to know when they’re ready, the best tools I’ve found for collecting, cracking and shelling them, how to properly dry and store them for winter, plus practical ways to use your harvest.

Comment NUT 🌰 and I’ll send you the guide.

Every fall, I save seeds from my best fruit, dry and store them and plant them again the following year.

🍉Seedless watermelons aren’t created by simply “taking the seeds out.” Most are produced through breeding that creates sterile plants, meaning you can’t save those seeds and grow the same watermelon again.

🍉Watermelon seeds are edible and naturally contain fibre, protein, healthy fats, magnesium and other minerals which our bodies need.

🍉Convenience has its place. But I also like food that can reproduce itself, the way nature intended. Non gmo, organic and the original design is what our bodies need.

🍉 It’s so easy to save seeds. Choose a healthy, fully ripe watermelon, scoop out the mature seeds, rinse away the fruit, and spread them in a single layer to dry completely. Once they’re dry, store them in a labelled envelope or jar in a cool, dark, dry place, then plant them again next season.
