Catedral Sagrado Corazón de Jesús, Limón, Costa Rica.

The Catholic presence at this site reaches back to the late 19th century, with the parish of Sagrado Corazón de Jesús established in 1891. An earlier cathedral, built in the 1950s, was eventually demolished after suffering structural damage, and the present modernist cathedral was built in its place. Its design preserves elements of the earlier church, including its stained-glass windows, bells and monumental image of Christ.

Inside is also an image of Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles affectionately known as “La Negrita”, the beloved patroness of Costa Rica. The small dark-skinned representation of the Virgin has been at the center of Costa Rican Catholic devotion for centuries, drawing pilgrims from across the country each August.

In Limón, that devotion has taken on a distinctly Caribbean expression; in 2025, the Diocese of Limón even created a special Afro-Caribbean-inspired garment for La Negrita.

Mercado Municipal de Limón.
A municipal market has occupied this site since 1893, becoming part of the commercial and social heart of Limón. The present market building, constructed between 1938 and 1941, and undergoing more updates, reflects the Caribbean character of the city, with architectural influences connected to the enclosed markets of Kingston, Jamaica.

Beneath the Costa Rican flags, generations have passed through these corridors to shop, work, meet, talk, and participate in the daily rhythms of the city.

Welcome to Jamaica Town, Limón Costa Rica.
Jamaica Town traces its roots to the late 1800s, when thousands of Jamaican workers came to Costa Rica to help build the Atlantic railroad and work along the Caribbean coast. Their descendants helped shape Limón’s language, food, music, architecture, and culture. Though the neighborhood was later renamed Barrio Roosevelt, residents reclaimed its historic name, Jamaica Town, in 2019, a recognition of the Afro-Caribbean community whose legacy remains deeply woven into Limón.

An unpaid opportunity doesn’t mean giving away your time or talent without boundaries. Knowing your worth is important. But when you consciously choose to say yes, treat the opportunity with the respect you want your work to receive

Sometimes the payment comes later; in a relationship, a referral, an introduction, a new idea, a door you didn’t even know existed.
