A seminal figure in the evolution of polar exploration, Fridtjof Nansen is today remembered for his epic crossing of the Greenland ice sheet in 1888, enduring temperatures plummeting below -40 degrees Celsius, as well as his attempt to reach the North Pole aboard Fram in 1895, which resulted in a harsh battle for survival in Franz Josef Land.

His experiences in the north led him to develop innovations, techniques, and strategies that would guide later explorers at both ends of the Earth, and many regard him as the grandfather of modern polar exploration! Nansen's legacy extends beyond the polar world; he was a noted diplomat, scientist, and humanitarian, particularly for his work aiding refugees after World War I.

Tomorrow is Friday! But in case you need a little Thursday pick-me-up, we've put together 10 photos of crabeater seals, designed to put a smile on your face!

Crabeater seals don't actually eat crabs, unlike their name suggests! Well, at least crabs aren't their main source of prey.

Instead, these slender seals feast on krill, using their uniquely shaped teeth to filter these tiny crustaceans from the surrounding seas. In turn, crabeater seals form a large part of the diet of leopard seals, which prowl the icy channels and patrol beneath the waves.

But enough about prey and predation! Here are ten crabeater seal photos to make you happy!

For many of us, sending and receiving postcards from far-flung locations is a happy childhood memory, or a practice that continues to immortalize our travel destinations! But did you know that you can send postcards from both ends of the Earth, complete with a stamp from the Arctic and Antarctica?

In Svalbard, the northernmost settlement on Earth, Ny-Ålesund is home to a small historic post office. Although it's no longer operational, a nearby store still handles post, so during your visit, you can send a letter or postcard home from the high Arctic - the perfect way to show off to friends and family!

At the other end of the globe, in Antarctica, the post office at Port Lockroy, the southernmost one on Earth, is staffed during the Antarctic expedition season - and on several of our itineraries, you'll have the chance to stamp and send from the wilds of the White Continent!

A Quiet Conversation, between Adelie Penguin pair. Perhaps this is how love begins in Antarctica.

In a world of ice and silence, some conversations need no words.
Just two hearts, two curious eyes, and a gentle touch of bills.

Narwhal alert!!

Encounters with these seldom-seen Arctic inhabitants don't occur often, so what happened aboard Rembrandt van Rijn yesterday in Greenland was truly special!

A pod of about 15 narwhals was sighted some distance from the ship as it navigated through Scoresby Sund, with the unmistakable tusk profile breaking the surface and glinting in the afternoon sun. Several parts of Scoresby Sund are off-limits and serve as narwhal reserves, and a small population is known to inhabit the area. However, they are more typically found deep in the pack ice, preferring the dark waters of the far north to the open ocean, which makes them difficult to spot.

Some of our expedition guides have spent years in the Arctic without encountering a narwhal, especially not this close and in such numbers. Needless to say, it was quite some time before anyone returned below deck, even as the light began to fade!
