I’m black but I am light skinned enough to have never had my cosplayers questioned. That only proves that the racists saying that “such-and-such character isn’t black” isn’t concerned about the race of the character, but about the skin color. They don’t like seeing black/brown skin in their cosplay spaces and that needs to change.

Too many white cosplayers with large platforms promote the normalcy of only seeing their skin color in cosplay. I don’t see as many “famous” white cosplayers promoting black/brown cosplays unless the character is black/brown.

I have heard horror stories of black cosplayers only getting invited to cosplay groups if there is a black/brown character and even being asked to cosplay Mammy/Sambo-like characters from that series.

We want to encourage and welcome black/brown cosplayers to cosplay whomever they want and whomever they resonate with. There are too little black/brown characters out there to limit them to just those.

LMAO! Another activist post on my part, but why not use my platform for these messages. I can’t call myself a fighter for #diversity and do nothing. Even if I’m just shouting into the void.

There was one time I was cosplaying Gaara and I was wearing his canon outfit. There were no alterations to it. Someone passed by me and said “woah! Nice female Gaara!” And it made me feel like shit. I have a very feminine presenting body with large hips and breasts. There was no indication that I was genderbending Gaara’s costume, so I felt really crappy about it. Like I did the whole cosplay a disservice because of the body I have.

I heard someone being called “Black Homura” from Madoka and they looked upset about it. White cosplayers would never be called “Caucasian Homura”, they would just be called “Homura” even though the character is Japanese.

.
These identifiers are not clever, validating, or accurate. They’re hurtful. They can trigger dysphoria or a sense of not belonging. It can be an isolating feeling. It can really harm someone and make them want to quit cosplaying because they won’t feel right in the costumes they work so hard on.

It’s really easy to just drop the identifiers and just use the character’s name. I guarantee that if you just use the character’s name, you will make that cosplayer’s day.

Edit: If someone creates their own identifiers or if you want to call yourself “Such-and-such character” that’s totally cool! Just don’t assume others are the same.
Edit 2: I’ve been informed that Latin Americans don’t prefer the term Latine or Latinx as well. So I apologize for that bit.

I am a plus-sized cosplayer. I’m 5’9” and weigh about 240lbs. Most of my weight is carried in my butt and thighs. I eat a balanced diet and exercise about once or twice a week if time allows. I have no health complications other than mental health issues. So don’t come up here in my comments section taking about “health”. I’m considered obese, but I’m totally fine health wise.

And even though I was open about my health situation, doesn’t mean anyone else owes you an explanation on what’s going on with their bodies. Fat =/= unhealthy. And even if a fat person IS unhealthy, their health journey is none of your business.

If you’re fatphobic ask yourself why that is.
