Newly launched @ochapublishing CEO Carlos Mena talks to The IMI about his mission as a cheerleader for underground house music in mainstream media…

Earlier this year, New York-based Ocha Media announced the launch of a new publishing administration and music synchronisation service with a focus primarily on underground house music.

It’s aim: to represent artists and record labels that otherwise would not be heard by music supervisors, producers and creative directors, therefore
missing out on a lucrative sync market.

🚨 Look who made it into @billboard Magazine Publishing News. Right next to the big boys.

Ocha Publishing will provide a traditional publishing administration role for its roster but will also proactively specialize in music synchronization. Through Ocha Publishing, music licensors and sync agents be able to quickly find one-stop, easily licensed, underground dance music, from a central, reliable source. The new venture also aims to address the lack of opportunity for house music artists and indie labels to maximize the revenue potential of their copyrights.

Vidas Secas by Carlos Mena features a poem written by Nilo Ybyra @pi.etapoeta The poem voices the sorrow and frustration of a people witnessing the slow death of their land due to climate change and neglect. It speaks of dry earth, vanishing rivers, and people who feel abandoned, looking to the sky in anger as nature’s rhythms are disrupted by human indifference. The poet’s pain stems from the feeling of invisibility and the tragic irony that those who suffer the most are often blamed for circumstances far beyond their control, while powerful forces profit from the very destruction that brings despair. #housemusic #casamena #deforestation #globalwarming #ocharecords by @ochapublishing

Here’s little story about a country gospel song called Ain’t No Grave written by Claude Ely in 1934. It was recorded and performed in a more Black Gospel style by Bozie Sturdivant in July 1942. Over the years it has been covered many times but most famously by Johnny Cash in 2003 right before his death. It was later released in 2010.

This brings me to 2024. Meet @tiffanyaustinmusic a talented Jazz singer from the Bay Area. She covered the song beautifully and it caught the attention of Bay Area producer, and my brother @djcecil . He did his thing and with her haunting vocal back in early 2019. I’m so excited to be able to share this with you now on @ocharecords . Also check out the vibes on @ezelmusic remix, it’s 🔥! #housemusic #aintnograve #ocharecords by @ochapublishing

Where’s My Phone?

In a age where vast oceans of house music gets released every week with what seems to be a shelf life of one week, making something that even gets noticed is a feat itself. Not to mention something that gets played three years down the line! But here we are. “Where’s My Phone?” is still getting dropped in front of some of the biggest crowds on the planet. Really cool to see something we created keep going and going. Ocha Publishing will represent underground house music artists and labels, with Yoruba Records, one of the most important labels in the genre, first to sign on.

Brooklyn, New York, January 30, 2022. New York-based Ocha Media Inc. has announced the launch of its publishing administration and music synchronization service, Ocha Publishing. Ocha Publishing will focus primarily on underground house music and represent a range of artists and record labels that otherwise would not have an opportunity to have their music heard by music supervisors, producers and creative directors.

Unlike other publishers or sync agents that cover a variety of genres, Ocha Publishing represents a carefully curated catalog of songs from within the house music genre, including sub-genres such as afro house, deep house, soulful house, techno and others, to provide the full spectrum of emotion and energy required by music supervisors and creative directors.

The first label to sign with Ocha Publishing is Osunlade’s Yoruba Records. One of the most prolific and beloved independent house music labels, with a highly coveted catalog, Yoruba will now be represented by Ocha Publishing for all music synchronization business.

Osunlade comments “I’ve been with major publishers and have done a lot of work on my own, so I know what it takes to be successful in this space. I am excited to be working with a team that cares about the music and will be focused on our mutual success.”
