Our Alumni Spotlight for November is JAMES SLAYBAUGH ‘21.

He gave some advice for students and alumni that he would like to share-

Q: What advice can you give to OCSA students or alumni?

If you want to work in the industry, know that it is a rough road. The rejection is real! But if you love it, as I do, it’s worth it. Be kind to yourself. Know and study yourself. Know your limits and your maximums and push them when appropriate, but also be gentle. Be forgiving to yourself; it solves more problems than you might think. Be open minded and kind; it means more to someone out there than you think. Try new things. It’s hard to truly know what you love and don’t until you have some level of experience with it. Try your hardest not to waste energy on what doesn’t matter – you’ll need it for the things and people that do matter. Adversity is infinite, but so is hope, belief, faith, and spirit. Feel free to be skeptical but allow some level of faith; it can go a long way to help you (I’m working on that myself right now). Everything is always a bit all over the place no matter what, so just live your life! That is the reason they call it a life after all, because you’re meant to live it.

OCSA’s beloved Ms. Dorian announced she will be leaving at the end of this school year after an esteemed 16-year career. We are sad to see her go but excited for her future!

Ms. Dorian was awarded an Individual Artist Fellowship Award from the California Arts Council. She will utilize her time next year to work on her play Under Water.
