Dr. Gloria Ladson-Billings wrote: I want to suggest that there is something that may be even more important than Black students having Black teachers and that is White students having Black teachers! It is important for White students to encounter Black people who are knowledgable and hold power and authority over them.”

This☝🏽is not a controversial statement, but a simple truth. And I would also add that all of us of every colour and Culture, including brown people like me, benefit from seeing our Black brothers and sisters in leadership and authority.

Grateful to @cbcbeingblackincanada for this documentary and so excited to see Ms. Patrice Hall @ms_p_hall (who will be gracing the stage at Stay Sensitized Conference 2026) being featured. I have seen firsthand how students and staff members (not just in her class but all over her school look up to her with respect and admiration). I’ve personally seen students of so many different backgrounds light up and receive an impartation of joy for learning.

Not too long ago a pre-teaching candidate commented to me on how blessed she feels to see this seasoned educator “do her thing” with students as young as kindergarten but all the way up to professional development for faculty.

A true leader of leaders who I personally believe will impact the country with her educational expertise and heart to make communities, sweeter, safer and stronger.

Salute 🫡 and big respect Ms. HaLL! @ottcatholicsb @ocsb_ben @ocsbequity @ocsbntip @catholic_teachers you’re very fortunate to have her leadership inside and outside the classroom. Just sayin :).

Wow. To be invited back here was amazing. I walk into this school and this kind kiddo in grade 4 walks up to me and enthusiastically and very politely, “Hi you have a beautiful skin tone”. We high five.

Moment laters, I walk in to do part two of “Colour Blind? Why Being ‘Not Racist’ Is Not Enough Anymore” for the faculty and a good chunk of the staff are wearing hellohope.ca/shop gear.

Two real smart grade 6s with two different skin tone colours asked me what my hoodie meant and I explained in kid friendly language that many of our Black sisters in humanity have experienced hate, hurt and harm disproportionately more than our sisters in humanity of other skin colours and therefore while we need to believe women and girls in general of of all backgrounds, we need to believe Black women especially. Hearing this from a brown man gets me a lot of interesting responses from adults but the kids always both nod their head in agreement and thank me for helping them understand further.

Needless to say, I felt the love when I was invited to come back to St. Rose School. Big love @ottcatholicsb and let’s keep building.
