🪚 Why do circular saw blades spin backward? 🤔
It looks backwards… but it’s actually one of the smartest safety features on the tool!
Circular saw blades spin down into the wood, not away from it. That downward motion pushes the material firmly against your work surface, creating a cleaner cut and giving the operator more control.
If the blade spun the opposite direction, it could lift the wood, increase the risk of kickback and make the saw much more difficult to use safely.
⚙️ Fun fact: Most of the blade is hidden beneath a protective guard. Only a small portion of the teeth is exposed while cutting, helping reduce the risk of accidental contact.
At the Ottawa Catholic School Board, students in Construction Technology, Co-op, OYAP, SHSM and the Elite Skilled Trades Academy (ESTA) learn not just how to use tools, but why they’re designed the way they are. Understanding the science behind the tools is just as important as learning the skill.
💬 What other tools have you always been curious about?

The Trades Have Changed
For many of us, the skilled trades aren’t what they used to be.
Today’s tradespeople use advanced technology, solve complex problems and help build the communities we all depend on.
They design, create, repair, innovate and lead.
These aren’t “backup” careers.
They’re careers filled with opportunity, purpose and pride.
As your child begins thinking about life after high school, keep every pathway open. Sometimes the right fit isn’t the one you expected.
At the Ottawa Catholic School Board, we believe every student deserves the opportunity to discover where their strengths can shine. Through SHSM, OYAP, Co-op, Dual Credit and the Elite Skilled Trades Academy (ESTA), students can explore careers, gain real-world experience and build confidence while they’re still in high school.
We’re also grateful for partners like @SkillsOntario whose Trades & Tech Truck brings hands-on experiences in skilled trades directly to our schools. By giving students the chance to try everything from welding and electrical to automotive technology and heavy equipment simulators, they’re helping spark curiosity and open doors to future careers. Thank you, Skills Ontario, for inspiring the next generation of skilled trades professionals! 👏
Because success looks different for every student, and every pathway deserves to be explored.
💙 At OCSB, we’re here to help every student discover the pathway that’s right for them.

💈 Why do barbers have red, white and blue striped poles?
Believe it or not… barbers weren’t always just hair stylists.
Hundreds of years ago, barbers also performed simple medical procedures like bloodletting, tooth extractions and wound care.
The famous barber pole is thought to represent those early days:
🔴 Red symbolizes blood.
⚪ White represents the bandages used during treatments.
🔵 Blue is often said to represent veins or, in some countries, was later added to reflect national colours.
The spiral design? It resembles the bandages wrapped around a pole that patients would grip during bloodletting.
Thankfully, today’s barbers are known for fades, shaves and fresh cuts, not medical procedures!
At OCSB, students exploring Hairstyling discover that every profession has a story. Learning the trade means understanding both the skills of today and the history that shaped them.
💬 Did you know the barber pole has a history dating back hundreds of years?

Why do welders wear special helmets?
It’s not just because the light is bright.

The electric arc created during welding can reach temperatures hotter than the surface of the sun. While you’re not touching the arc itself, it produces an incredibly intense light along with invisible ultraviolet (UV) and infrared (IR) radiation that can seriously damage your eyes and skin.

A welding helmet helps protect against:
👀 Intense visible light that can make it impossible to see.
☀️ UV rays that can cause a painful eye injury called “arc eye” or “welder’s flash.”
🔥 IR radiation and flying sparks that can burn your face and eyes.

Modern welding helmets even have auto-darkening lenses that switch from clear to dark in a fraction of a second as soon as the arc is struck. This allows welders to position their work with the helmet down before it instantly darkens, improving both safety and accuracy.

At the OCSB, safety is one of the first lessons students learn. Whether they’re exploring welding, construction, automotive or another Skilled Trade, students develop the habits, knowledge and confidence to work safely while building real-world skills.

Because every great project starts with working safely.

Confidence Comes From Doing
One of the greatest gifts we can give young people is confidence.
And confidence doesn’t always come from sitting at a desk.
Sometimes, it comes from striking an arc for the very first time.
The first weld might not be perfect. It might be uneven or a little messy. But with every spark, every practice piece and every new skill, something else is being built alongside the metal.
Confidence.
At the Ottawa Catholic School Board, students don’t just learn about the skilled trades. Through SHSM, OYAP, Co-op, Dual Credit and the Elite Skilled Trades Academy (ESTA), they have the opportunity to experience them firsthand.
Whether they’re learning to weld, repair a vehicle, wire a circuit, prepare a meal or frame a wall, they’re discovering more than technical skills. They’re discovering what they’re capable of.
Because when a student realizes, “I built that,” something changes.
They stand a little taller.
They believe in themselves a little more.
And that confidence often carries into every part of their life.
Sometimes, the most important thing a student builds isn’t something made of steel.
It’s belief in themselves. 💙

Success Doesn't Follow One Road
Every child is different.
Some learn best from books.
Others learn by building, fixing, creating or solving problems with their hands.
Neither path is better.
They're simply different.
At the Ottawa Catholic School Board, we believe success begins by helping every student discover their unique gifts and talents.
Whether that journey leads to university, college, apprenticeship or the workplace, our pathways help students build the confidence, skills and experience to take the next step.
The goal isn't choosing the "right" pathway.
It's helping your child discover the pathway that's right for them.

Every Trade Needs Great Women
When you picture a welder, an electrician, a plumber, or a carpenter…
Who comes to mind?
For many of us, outdated stereotypes still shape the way we think about the skilled trades. But today's job sites, workshops and classrooms are changing, and that's a good thing.
At the Ottawa Catholic School Board, we believe every student deserves the opportunity to discover where their talents can take them, including the skilled trades.
Girls belong in the skilled trades.
They bring creativity, precision, leadership, problem-solving and fresh perspectives to industries that are building the future.
Whether your daughter dreams of designing beautiful spaces, repairing vehicles, wiring smart homes, building communities or becoming her own boss, there is a place for her.
Through SHSM, OYAP, Co-op, Dual Credit and the Elite Skilled Trades Academy (ESTA), OCSB students have opportunities to explore rewarding careers, gain hands-on experience and build the skills employers are looking for.
The future of the skilled trades isn't just being built for women.
It's being built by women.
💙 Encourage her to explore every possibility.
Because talent doesn't have a gender.

⚡ Why do electricians use copper wire?

Because copper is one of nature’s best conductors of electricity.
That means electricity can travel through it quickly and efficiently with very little energy lost as heat.
But that’s not the only reason.

Copper is also:
🛠️ Strong enough to last for decades.
🔄 Flexible enough to bend around corners and through walls.
🧲 Resistant to corrosion, helping electrical systems stay safe and reliable over time.

In fact, the average home contains hundreds of metres of copper wire hidden behind the walls, quietly powering lights, appliances and the technology we rely on every day.

At the OCSB, students exploring electrical careers through Construction Technology, SHSM, OYAP and the Elite Skilled Trades Academy (ESTA) learn not just how to install electrical systems, but why the materials they use matter.

Sometimes, the most important parts of a building are the ones you’ll never see.

Today is World Youth Skills Day, a day that recognizes the importance of equipping young people with the skills they need to build a brighter future.

This year’s theme, Skills for a Shared Future, reminds us that success isn’t built on technical ability alone. It grows through collaboration, creativity, resilience, compassion and a willingness to solve real-world problems.

Throughout the year, we’ve watched OCSB students develop those skills in classrooms, workshops and communities across Ottawa. Whether competing at Skills Ontario, beginning Apprenticeships, supporting local organizations or exploring careers through Co-op and the Elite Skilled Trades Academy, they’ve shown that learning a skill is about far more than finding a job.

It’s about discovering how your talents can make a difference.

Happy World Youth Skills Day to every student who is building the future, one skill at a time.

Why does the end of a tape measure wiggle? 🤔
Because it’s supposed to.
That little metal hook is designed to move ever so slightly, usually about the thickness of the hook itself.
Why?
It helps ensure your measurements stay accurate whether you’re:
📏 Hooking the tape over the edge of a board (an outside measurement), or
📐 Pushing the hook against a wall (an inside measurement).
When you hook the tape, the metal tab pulls outward.
When you push against a surface, it slides inward.
That tiny bit of movement compensates for the hook's thickness, keeping your measurement accurate in both situations.

It’s a small piece of engineering that solves a big problem.

At the OCSB, students in Construction Technology, SHSM, OYAP and the Elite Skilled Trades Academy (ESTA) learn that precision matters. Sometimes, the smallest details make the biggest difference.

🧱 Why do bricks have holes?
Those holes aren’t a mistake… and they aren’t just there to make bricks lighter.
They actually serve several important purposes:
🏗️ They make bricks easier to handle. A lighter brick helps reduce fatigue for Masons who may lay hundreds of bricks in a day.
🔒 They create a stronger wall. When mortar fills the holes, it forms a stronger bond between the bricks.
🔥 They help bricks bake evenly. During manufacturing, the holes allow heat to reach the centre of the brick more efficiently, creating a stronger, more consistent product.
📦 They make transportation more efficient. Lighter bricks are easier to move and require less energy to transport.
At OCSB, students exploring masonry and construction learn that every material has a purpose and every design decision solves a problem.
Sometimes, the strongest ideas are built around the smallest details.
