No one really talks about how hard it is to live far from your people.

Your best friend.
Your cousin who feels more like a sister.
Your siblings.

You do what you can—FaceTime calls, shared memes, daily check-ins, little updates to stay connected. But even when you’re in constant communication, something’s still missing.

You can’t drop by unannounced.
You can’t meet up for lunch just because the day feels heavy.
Your kids don’t get to grow up around each other the way you always pictured.
And every visit comes with a countdown—how many days until goodbye.

There’s no spontaneity. No lazy afternoons together.
Everything is planned, scheduled, packed with pressure to make every moment count.
You fit months of love and life into a few days, and it never feels like enough.

It’s not about drifting apart, because you’re not.
It’s about knowing they’d be at every birthday, every celebration, every hard day—if only the miles didn’t stretch so far between you.

There’s a certain kind of grief in that.
Not loud. Not obvious.
But always there, in the background , with every FaceTime celebration, every end to a trip, every long phone call.

Because no matter how full life gets, there’s still a version of it you quietly wish for—
The one where your people were just down the road. by @od3ssa_10
