Big news for La Mesa: Billy and Suzanna Beltz, owners of @oddishwine and @lostcausemeadery, are pouring everything they have into renovating a 5,000-square-foot building between La Mesa Village and MacArthur Park to open a wine/beer bar, coffee shop, all-day cafe, wine shop, and restaurant. @bica_sd swill come on as a partner to run the restaurant and coffee program.⁠

The concept doesn’t have a name yet, but the vision is simple: a community gathering space open from morning until night that’s family-friendly, creatively designed, and, well… cool.⁠
⁠
The building has been around since the 1940s, and the Beltzes plan to keep its soul and character as much as possible, highlighting original details like its barrel-shaped wooden roof and large front windows. Eventually, plans also include an outdoor dining and drinking space and a kid-friendly area.⁠
⁠
Expect coffee and light breakfast items before a transition to lunch and dinner, plus a full bar featuring Oddish and Lost Cause products, other local wines, beers, and ciders, an aperitivo program, and low-ABV cocktails and spritzes. A wood-fired oven and rotisserie are also planned, along with a small retail space focused on natural wines and ciders from San Diego, Baja California, and beyond.⁠

Community is the heart of the project—more than food, more than drinks. And with Stella Jean’s, Pop Pie, Native Poppy, and other new arrivals headed to La Mesa, this is another sign the city may not stay under the radar much longer.⁠

The new concept is projected to open by the end of 2027 at 8495 La Mesa Blvd.⁠

Amaro Mostro, a San Diego amaro project. Full list of ingredients/botanicals:
Wormwood, mugwort, cinchona, orange zest, vanilla, yarrow, saffron, black walnut leaves, myrrh, aloe ferox, hyssop, black cardamom, green cardamom, bitter orange peel, cherry bark, long pepper, angelica root, lavender, orange blossom honey and grape brandy. The base is Zinfandel wine.

Amaro Mostro is a wine-based amaro made with 18 different botanicals. Decadent notes of chocolate covered cherry, dried fig, vanilla bean and orange zest mix with strong herbaceous and resinous notes to create a fun and wonderfully sweet/bitter sipping experience.
