Some days there are just too many thoughts, too many feelings, too many things all at once. 💛

Meet Overwhelmed Oki. Tangled up, hard hat on, doing their best. Sound familiar?

Here’s what the science tells us: when we’re overwhelmed, our brain’s prefrontal cortex (the part that helps us think, plan and problem solve) actually goes offline. We’re not being dramatic. We’re not failing. Our brain is simply carrying more than it was designed to hold alone.

The first step? Just naming it. Research shows that simply saying “I feel overwhelmed” — out loud or even to yourself — actually calms the brain’s alarm system. Scientists call it “affect labelling.” We call it being honest about how you feel.

Then we acknowledge it — “this is hard and that’s okay.” No fixing, no rushing, no “just calm down.” Just making space for the feeling to exist without shame. Because when we feel truly seen in our emotion, our nervous system can actually begin to settle. 🧡

And then? We ask for help. Whether you’re 5 or 45, it’s okay to say “I need a minute” or “I need someone.” Overwhelmed Oki gives us all permission to do that.

You’re not too much. You’re just carrying a lot. 💛

If you start to feel a bother, choose Calm Oki. He will remind us that a recipe for a smooth day is slow breaths and a quick rest.

When we’re dysregulated, our nervous system is in fight-or-flight mode, our heart races, muscles tense and our brain struggles to think clearly. Slow, deep breaths that fill the belly (diaphragmatic breathing) directly activate the vagus nerve, which signals the brain to switch from panic to calm. Even just a few slow exhales can lower cortisol, slow the heart rate and bring the thinking brain back online.

This is the science behind Calm Oki. Essentially, rest isn’t laziness, it’s biology. 🩵 by @oddkin.space

Brave doesn’t mean we’re not scared. Brave means we try anyway, because every try makes us stronger.

Together, we can do anything! (As long as it’s safe 😂) #BraveOki by @oddkin.space

Things we’re leaving behind this October 🍁👇

When we change how we view children, their brains, and their environments, everything shifts. This month, we're ghosting 👻 a few outdated narratives to make space for genuine connection and understanding:

1. "They're doing it on purpose."
When a child is overwhelmed or dysregulated, it is rarely a calculation (it is a signal). Their nervous system is simply asking for safety, co-regulation, and support, not punishment.

2. Rigid boxes for play and learning.
Every child processes, plays, and learns differently. When we force rigid expectations onto how they should engage, we often force them to mask their true needs just to conform.

3. The pressure to "act their age."
Chronological age doesn't dictate emotional bandwidth. Forcing children to meet arbitrary social milestones ignores their unique, organic pace of growth.

4. The myth of isolated parenting.
We were never meant to carry the weight of raising children entirely on our own. Rejecting isolation isn't a sign of struggle (it is an act of building a healthier, more supportive ecosystem for our whole family).

Which of these narratives are you ready to leave behind? 🎃🍭 by @oddkin.space

This one really changed how I see things 🥹

Plants don’t grow by force. They grow when the conditions are right. 🪴

So often, when we or our children struggle, our first instinct is to look inward and ask, "What is wrong with me?" or "Why can't they just adjust?"

But human beings are no different. We thrive when our surrounding conditions allow us to feel safe and grounded.

Every day, the spaces we inhabit (our daily routines, emotional tone, pace, and community) act as the soil for our families. When a child or a parent is overwhelmed, it is rarely a sign that anyone needs fixing. More often, it is a quiet signal that the environment needs a shift.

As ODD KiN takes form, it will always be rooted in compassion, connection, and honoring individual rhythms. We believe in building supportive, intentional spaces where both adults and children get to bloom as their true, authentic selves without needing to be molded or forced.

I have been thinking a lot about the spaces we create and how much they shape our inner world. When you look at your own days right now, what is one small thing in your environment that feels like it is nourishing you or your child, and what might need a gentle adjustment? by @oddkin.space

True story from when I was a kid: Mum told me to breathe, I breathed, and surprise... I was still furious. 💀

Turns out deep breathing doesn't cure rage, it just gives your anger extra oxygen to power up. 🫁🔥

When was the last time someone told you to "just breathe" right when you were about to lose it? 😂 by @oddkin.space

5 things I wholeheartedly believe in:
💛 1. Connection comes first.
Before we try to teach, fix, or correct, kids just need to feel us beside them. Co-regulation isn't a complex thing. It's as simple as showing up so they don't have to carry the big stuff alone.

💛2. If they could, they would.
When a child is struggling, it’s not bad behavior. It's an unmet need or an emotion too big for their body. Choosing to believe they are doing their best changes everything.

💛3. Growing shouldn't feel like homework or a test.
Learning how to navigate feelings doesn't happen through manuals or rigid tests. It happens in the messy, playful, everyday moments. Through connection, stories, giggles, and shared space.

💛4. Parents are doing their absolute best.
It’s often our first time figuring all of this out, too. We’re learning right alongside our kids, and there is so much grace in growing together.

💛5. Having a background in therapy doesn't mean I know it all.
I don't hold all the answers, and I’m always open to learning. Real wisdom comes from real people and lived experiences. That’s who I want to listen to and create for.

🥰 What’s one thing you wholeheartedly believe in? I’d love to know :) by @oddkin.space

Note to self: Fancy tools do not make you faster or better. They just ruin your paper quicker.
Humbled myself real fast and went straight back to trusty scissors. Stick to what works, right? 😅 by @oddkin.space

Strings tangled. Blocks everywhere. Thoughts racing. Heart pounding. 💛
Overwhelmed Oki didn’t need to have it all together. He just needed to say three small words: “I’m overwhelmed.”

Research shows us that simply naming what we feel – what scientists call affect labelling – begins to calm the brain’s alarm system straight away. We don’t need to fix it first. We just need to say it out loud.

And then comes the next brave thing: letting someone help. Because overwhelm was never meant to be carried alone. Everything feels lighter with helping hands.

Whether you’re 5 or 45, it’s okay to wiggle your fingers, say the words and let someone in.
You don’t have to untangle it all at once. Just one string at a time.

This is your space, and let’s go your pace. ✨ by @oddkin.space

CRASH. We’ve all had a block tower moment. 💙

Something doesn’t go to plan, and suddenly our face feels hot, our chest feels tight and everything inside wants to react.
Calm Oki shows us something quietly powerful – that in that moment, we have a choice. Not to suppress the feeling, not to pretend it didn’t hurt, but to pause and let the body lead the way back to steady.

That slow breath Oki took? That’s the nervous system doing exactly what it was designed to do. Deep, slow breathing activates the vagus nerve – the body’s own built in calm switch – bringing our heart rate down and our thinking brain back online.

Calm isn’t something that just happens to us. It’s something we can choose, practise and grow, at any age. 🌿
