A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is an intimate, grounded HBO television series set in the Game of Thrones universe, following the travels of an honorable, lowborn hedge knight and his secret royal squire.

Adapted from George R.R. Martin’s Dunk and Egg novellas (starting with The Hedge Knight), the story takes place roughly 90 years before the events of Game of Thrones and after House of the Dragon.

It follows Ser Duncan the Tall (β€œDunk”), a towering and naive but good-hearted hedge knight, and Egg, a sharp-witted bald boy who is secretly Prince Aegon Targaryen in disguise.

Unlike its predecessor series, the show offers a street-level, intimate view of Westeros. It deals with regional tournaments, personal honor, and the lives of common folk rather than massive global wars, magic, or living dragons. by @oddsandench

In Game of Thrones Season 2, Episode 7 (β€œA Man Without Honor”), Tywin Lannister catches Arya pretending to be a commoner from the Riverlands while serving as his cupbearer at Harrenhal. After tripping her up on House Mooton’s sigil, he corners her into admitting she is from the North.

Tywin asks what people in the North say about Robb. Arya replies that they call him the β€œYoung Wolf”.

When pressed, she shares the battlefield legends: that he rides a giant direwolf, can turn into a wolf at will, and cannot be killed.

Tywin asks, β€œAnd do you believe them?” Arya looks him straight in the eye and answers coldly, β€œNo, my lord. Anyone can be killed.” by @oddsandench

Tyrion and Tywin Lannister share one of the most toxic, complex, and brilliantly written father-son relationships in Game of Thrones and George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire books. Tywin, the ruthless patriarch of House Lannister, despised Tyrion from birth because Tyrion is a dwarf and his mother, Joanna, died giving birth to him. Despite this hatred, Tyrion inherited his father’s sharp intellect and political cunning.

Tywin refused to acknowledge Tyrion as a true son or heir, yet he routinely used Tyrion’s sharp mind when his other children (Cersei and Jaime) faltered. by @oddsandench

The The Witch (2015 film) is a 2015 gothic folk horror movie written and directed by Robert Eggers.

Set in 1630s New England, an isolated Puritan family is banished from their plantation and builds a farm near a dark, ominous forest. When their newborn baby mysteriously vanishes and their crops fail, paranoia, religious guilt, and fear of witchcraft tear the family apart from within.

The Rotten Tomatoes consensus calls the film thought-provoking, visually compelling, and unsettling. On Reddit, opinions are mixed regarding the slow pacing and archaic dialogue, though many praise its authentic atmosphere and psychological depth. by @oddsandench

The Faoladh of Irish mythology and the American werewolf popularized by Hollywood represent two completely opposite ends of the shapeshifter spectrum. While the modern American werewolf is a tragic, bloodthirsty monster born from horror movies like The Wolf Man and An American Werewolf in London, the ancient Irish Faoladh was traditionally viewed as a guardian, community protector, and ally to humanity.

The primary difference is their moral alignment. In pop culture, an American werewolf is a curse. The transformed person loses all sanity, brutally murdering friends and strangers alike. In contrast, the Faoladh (sometimes called Conroicht) was deeply respected. Ancient Irish texts, such as the stories of the Werewolves of Ossory, describe them as β€œMac Tíre” (the Sons of the Countryside). They were known to watch over lost travelers, protect children from bandits, and even be recruited by ancient kings to fight as noble warriors in times of war.

An American werewolf has zero control over their actions or when they turn. The full moon forces a excruciating, body-breaking shift, and the human mind goes entirely dormant. The Faoladh usually possessed the ability to shapeshift at will without needing the moon. Crucially, they retained their human minds while in wolf form. One famous medieval text even records a priest encountering a wolf in the woods of Ossory that spoke perfect human language, begging the priest to read the last rites to his dying wife.

You become an American werewolf by surviving an attack from oneβ€”it acts like an infectious curse. The Faoladh tradition was largely hereditary. Entire clans or families in ancient Ireland were believed to carry the wolf-shifting trait. In some specific regional lore, a family might be fated to have two members turn into wolves for seven years at a time. If they survived the seven years without harming humans, they would return to human form and another pair would take their place. by @oddsandench

At the end of Robert Eggers’ The Witch, the surviving daughter Thomasin gives in to the devil, signs his book, and joins a coven of witches in the woods to find ultimate freedom.

Thomasin’s mother attacks her, and Thomasin kills her in self-defense. Her father is killed by the family’s goat, Black Phillip, and her young siblings vanish.

The goat stands before Thomasin and asks if she wants to β€œlive deliciously”. He transforms into a human man representing the devil.

Thomasin signs a contract in a dark book, trading her old life for supernatural power.

She walks naked into the forest, joins a group of witches, and begins to float in the air with them in joy.

Her family blamed her for every bad thing that happened and accused her of witchcraft.

Thomasin prayed to God for help, but her family still suffered and died.

The strict Puritan lifestyle offered her only hard work and misery. The devil offers her a choice and personal power, turning a tragic doom into a strange kind of freedom. by @oddsandench

The Valkyrie in Robert Eggers’ 2022 film The Northman is played by actress Ineta Sliuzaite, and her distinct appearance features historical teeth modifications rather than modern dental braces.

The horizontal lines on the Valkyrie’s teeth are not braces. They represent real archaeological findings where Viking Age people filed horizontal grooves into their front teeth and filled them with a dark resin or pigment. This practice was meant to look fierce and intimidating in battle.

Designed with input from historical consultant Neil Price, her outfit includes pale blue eyes, full battle regalia, and swan-like white feather elements on her cape and helmet, tying into Norse mythology.

She appears at the end of the film on a white horse to carry the fallen prince Amleth to Valhalla. by @oddsandench

Arya Stark and Sandor Clegane (the Hound) form one of the most celebrated and complex duos in Game of Thrones. After the Red Wedding, the Hound captures Arya with the intent to ransom her to her family, but the two instead embark on a gritty, cross-country journey through the Riverlands, evolving into an unlikely mentor-protector pairing.

Arya despises Sandor early on because he murdered her childhood friend, Mycah (the butcher’s boy), in Season 1, earning him a prominent spot on her infamous daily death list.

Stranded in a war-torn landscape, they rely on each other to survive. Sandor teaches Arya harsh survival truths about Westeros, stripping away her romanticized notions of knights and nobility.

Despite their constant bickering and threats, a deep mutual respect and unspoken affection take root. He accepts her for who she is (telling her she’s β€œno lady”), and she tends to his wounds. by @oddsandench
