Those of you who remember my post from yesterday, I introduced you to The Penglet, the majestic creature me and @dr.acrocat created.

I took the 3D model I did of him, and tried to animate him with a simple walk cycle.

I have to admit how challenging that was. I haven't done a 3D character animation since 2006, when I worked on @yaronyanai and Damon Lavenski's graduation film.

I would have loved to say this might open new avenues, but we all know it's all going to disappear with AI coming into our life. So this will stay just a funny story.

Please and Thank You. by @oded_naaman

Somewhere in 2005 me and @dr.acrocat gave birth to the magnificent mythological creature known as The PENGLET.

Half penguin, half piglet, the Penglet is rarer than a unicorn, wiser than a Chinese dragon and can knit sweaters better than your average Minotaur.

He roams the land dispensing wisdom, but he barely talks, and even when he does, his accent is incomprehensible.

We had big plans for him at the time: books, TV shows, movie trilogy and a brand deal with Nike, but it all got buried in life.

As you all know I mentioned a couple of times that I've been finding all kind of treasures in my folders, and I found him hiding there, so I decided to model him in Blender (I also did a small animation with him, but I will share it tomorrow since LinkedIn won't let mix photos and videos).

I've attached it here along side some old variations of him. There is also a rare boudoir painting of him in a storage unit I made for Aner's birthday one year. That's going to be worth a lot of money now that I'm revealing the Penglet to the world.

What do you think?

Please and Thank You

p.s.
I tried to paint the 3D print I did of him but it didn't go so well. I learned alot though and next time it will be better. by @oded_naaman

I was instructed by son to 3D print him a cow.

So I designed one and printed. Print didn't go so well, but I enjoyed the design... by @oded_naaman

I've been concentrating on LinkedIn lately, and posting mostly there (so if you want - send a connection!), but here are some little animation doodles I did recently

Here's a little 3D modeling I did. My son saw in one of Doctor Seuss' books a machine and asked me to make him a real one. While I work on that, we drew some sketches, and I modeled it. It is an ice machine (as I was instructed).

I tried to also 3D print it but that went horribly wrong and I need to go back and work on the model. I'll keep you posted.

Please and Thank you

This is also a reminder I want to network with anyone who would talk to me about any subject, so feel free to schedule a meeting with me!

"If you can't beat them, join them..."

Yes. I feel defeated.
If you had a conversation with me in the past 2 years, you know I'm terrified of AI. Not just the prospect of the machines taking over and we're all going to live in a Terminator dystopia (but that also...), but the lose of jobs, erosion of creativity, and the general sense of human redundancy.

At least with Gen-AI I feel like they are now saying that the fact I dedicated my life for the craft and skills of visual storytelling means nothing, because if you can write a prompt, the computer will create it for you.

"Everyone is a filmmaker, everyone is an illustrator, or a graphic designer, or a musician! if you can think it, you can create it! Let's celebrate!"

But we already witnessing how much junk AI produces around us. I don't want to be one of those creators who just spits out something for the sake of doing it. I prefer NOT doing anything since I am uninspired / terrified / lazy / need to watch TV, and then once in a while produce something really invested, but also inspired.

Alas, it's not how it goes. As I am searching for a new job, I find that more and more want to see AI produced content - and I have none, and I haven't engaged with it too much, so I decided to see what it's all about.

I too my Stop-motion Claymation BFA thesis film - "And Then Suddenly..." and decided to turn it to live action using AI. I did my first deep with the tools I have available to me, just to see what's possible. Below are the results of a full day of playing, prompting and playing around.

For those of you who wonder - I am still a hater. I truly believe that if your project requires a penguin with an eyepatch on a mountain top, don't use AI. Pay an animator, a VFX artist or an illustrator to create it for you, rather than a computer...

And if you are interested in WHY there is a penguin with an eyepatch on a mountain top, you can view my film here (with the wonderful original music by @avnerdormanmusic ): https://www.odednaaman.com/animations?pgid=mcf6ocv0-cafb944d-22c4-44aa-8733-990cc006fa77

Those of you who know me, know that I always find excuses to not work on my own projects. I would work nights and weekends on clients' projects, help friends with their creative endeavors asking nothing in return and stop strangers on the street and ask them if they need a logo designed...

But doing my own work? Anything can stop that: I have to fold laundry, my mom just called, I have to finish the season of a show I haven't even started and there's an interesting spot on the wall that needs my attention to figure out what it looks like (a circle. it was a circle).

My latest excuse was that I don't have a place to work, and it's not fun to spread the watercolors and brushes on the kitchen table, or the table is not stable enough to do some stop-motion for fun.

So I bought a drafting table. I put it together and collected all my art supply from around the house (they were everywhere...) and now I have this perfect creative spot to work.

Will I use it? I don't know. Ask the treadmill I once bought saying I will walk and run on it everyday.

But for now - I'm excited. I have a crippling fear from a blank page, so I need to find something to do. Maybe I'll invest in the last 2 weeks of Inktober...

Wish me luck...

p.s.

some of the art supplies in the photos, like some brushes and paints, have been with me since my days in Art School - about 25 years. I never thought I'll be one of those artists who hold on for some stuff for 50 years and still use them... but hey - there is still time...

#Blender Journey:
Credit where credit is due: I came across a cool process video for a cartoon dace rig by @edwardurena12 (link below). It blew my mind and I wanted to try and duplicate. Unfortunately the process he was using was too complicated for me at this point and I tried my best to create something that's similar but with simpler workflow. It didn't come out as well as his. But it's a start, mostly because I stayed away from animation in Blender until now. this is the first time I actually tried to move something for real, and I found it very confusing and unintuitive. Everytime I added something or tried to change I ruined something else, and the graph editor was hard to to control and achieve the result I wanted. So lots to work on there. I also tried to play with texture and animating them as well, including one render with hair that went really bad...
