Designing Temporary Spaces Beyond curatorial decisions and content display, responsible and creative material use is a recurring factor in our exhibition design process. How can we maximise the potential of each material while using less, and ensure its second life is meaningfully useful? How do we design with these considerations in mind without forgetting our core responsibility as designers—that design should never be arbitrary, but always distinct? As we consolidate our thoughts on designing for temporary spaces, we find ourselves embarking on a journey to uncover the potential in materials and methods that challenge and subvert established practices. We’ve published a short essay expanding on “Designing Temporary Spaces”—please find the link in our bio. #odesignoffice #temporaryspaces by @odesignoffice
Vignettes from our exhibition design for New Orchard, curated by @studio___grain. For this exhibition, we repurposed ropes from previous projects and introduced light-permeable partitions made of reusable, translucent meshed tarpaulin. These elements help create an inviting and open atmosphere, encouraging visitors to engage more freely with the exhibits. Exhibition-making often relies on construction materials for short-term use — built to last only days or weeks. But what happens after the event ends? In most cases, these materials are discarded. Having participated in and designed several installations during design festivals, we’ve witnessed firsthand the excessive waste that accumulates once the lights go out. These experiences have shaped our approach: being environmentally responsible means thinking creatively, designing with foresight, and choosing materials that can be reused and repurposed. Being ecologically responsible is not only about backing it with carbon footprint data, but also with an attitude to waste less. To our best effort, we’ve committed to designing exhibitions that waste less, and also using components that don’t end up in the bin. Many of these materials are still stored with us, ready to find new life in future exhibition projects. We look forward to sharing more soon! Photography: @odd____odd by @odesignoffice
