Short story long - My first car was a Cherokee and I’ve always had a soft spot for ‘em. I got this thing a year ago with a clean body and a bad engine. Now it still barely runs but it looks great and is headed to @brothers4x4 for a long list of goodies. The plan is to have a daily-able but extremely capable camping rig.

As convenient as a rooftop tent set up is, it becomes real inconvenient living in a city like LA.

I recently moved into this house with an old(er) unfinished garage and I remembered I had once seen someone on the internet using a ceiling hoist to store their tent. After a bunch of research I found this one from @fleximounts_official. Problem was that it is designed for a finished garage with horizontal joists but I figured I could come up with a way to make it work.

This was my solution:
- (2) 2x6 spreader boards, each anchored to 4 trusses to spread the load
- Reinforced eye bolts, 3600# chain & turnbuckles that attach to the “subframe”
- The subframe is 2x4 and steel framing brackets, made to the mounting specs of the joist

The joist is rated for 300 lbs, so it handles this @gofsr Odyssey and awning easily (180ish lbs). I also swung from the thing before putting the tent on.. 🙃

Something a little different 🚲

This thing has a long backstory. The project I did before this page - A 1984 Yamaha Virago, taken down to a pile of parts, changed/altered/cut/fabbed, and brought back together with a lot of newer parts.

Now it sits under a cover 90% of the time, but I want to start posting some of the process here.

@offroadmania_com just finished designing their new 80 Series rack, and I convinced them to send me one before it really hit the market 😏

They’re rad people. I got a rack from them for my Jeep and loved it. I think they’re a smaller shop, based in Poland (but somehow got a rack to me in 3 days), they make a lot of stuff for non-US rigs like the Nissan Patrol and Mitsubishi Pajero but are starting to really build out their Land Cruiser catalogue

I was kicking the idea of a rack around for forever and there are solid options, but I’m glad I went this way. It has a lot of cool features and is super cost-competitive

And I can finally strap things down without going thru the door jambs 🙃
