🎵 DUB WAR – ONE CHILL
💥 APHRODITE SMASH UP THE PLACE MIX
📀 Beastwax | BEASTWAX 5 | 1996

The mix name says it all. That unmistakable Aphrodite bounce heavy bass with a groove you can’t stand still to.

🧬 DEEP VAULT DETAIL: Aphrodite says Earache commissioned this remix. It landed on Dub War’s Soundclash EP, with DJ Rap remixing Million Dollar Love on the flip. Serious talent on one piece of wax.

🇯🇪 VANGUARD ARCHIVES: We were absolutely gassed to bring Aphrodite to Jersey for Forgotten Forest a few years back. Unbelievable set, incredible night. A true pioneer of that early jump-up sound, doing what he does best.

🖤 Big love to Aphrodite, every time.

🎵 DR WOOTANG – ORIGINAL WOOTANG
📀 Dread Recordings | DREAD 006

Without doubt, one of my favourite Dread records. Used to rinse this and hearing it in the rave when we’d fly over to the UK was something else. Dark, heavy and gangsta exactly how we liked it.

🧬 DEEP VAULT DETAIL: Dr Wootang was Ray Keith. That unmistakable synth comes from Ohio Players’ Funky Worm, while the “lighter” vocal comes from Fu-Schnickens’ Cray-Z—the same source used on DJ SS’s The Lighter.

🇯🇪 VANGUARD ARCHIVES: We brought Ray to Plymouth Uni for Terminology. Still one of my favourite sets I’ve ever heard. Big up Ray and the Dread massive, every time.

🖤 Some records never leave you.

🎵 Apollo 69 – Mindgaterz (Peshay Remix)
📀 Creative Source | CRSE 022 | 1999

This is such a wicked tune and remix from Peshay. First heard Fabio play this on BBC Radio 1 back in the day. Absolute roller of a tune. Couldn’t wait to get it on vinyl and play it out all the time. Still one of my favorite liquid tunes of that era….Big up Fabio, big up Peshay. Absolutely banging tune 🔥

🎵 B-JAM – FUNKULA
📀 No Smoking Records | SMOKE 6 | 1995

Love pulling this one out. That bassline, the groove, the little touches throughout it’s got so much character. Exactly the kind of record I want to share through these Vaults.

🧬 DEEP VAULT DETAIL: The vocal comes from Lords Of The Underground’s Tic Toc, while the melody replays Warren G’s So Many Ways. Two hip-hop records given a completely different life in jungle.

🇯🇪 VANGUARD ARCHIVES: Getting past 100 hasn’t made choosing any easier. There’s still so much in the collection I want you to hear. This had to be next.

🖤 Still a joy to put the needle on this one.

🎵 FIREFOX – BONANZA KID
📀 Philly Blunt Records | PB006 | 1995

🤠 THE WILD WEST, THROUGH A JUNGLE SOUNDSYSTEM.

That strange little “boing”. The rising tension. Then the bass arrives.

For me, this is jungle with its imagination running wild. Heavy enough to shake the room, playful enough to make everyone grin.

🕵️ BEHIND THE NAME: Firefox was RONI SIZE. Bonanza Kid shared its original 12-inch with Buck Rogers two classics hiding behind one alias.

🧬 DEEP VAULT DETAIL: That distinctive jaw-harp sound comes from Ennio Morricone’s For a Few Dollars More theme. The melody draws on a replay of Elmer Bernstein’s The Magnificent Seven.

Two Western soundtracks repurposed for the jungle dancefloor. That’s the freedom of this music: inspiration could come from anywhere.

📜 And here’s a proper archive find: a 1995 Philly Blunt advert originally announced Bonanza Kid with Jungle A Run on the flip. The released record paired it with Buck Rogers instead. A tiny glimpse of the catalogue before it became history.

Philly Blunt itself began in 1994, created by Bryan Gee and Jumpin’ Jack Frost alongside V Recordings. Frost said it was started specifically to release Leviticus and Firefox.

🇯🇪 VANGUARD ARCHIVES: We’ve welcomed Roni to Jersey countless times, through Vanguard and our early Terminology nights. Records like this remind me how much of his story lives beyond the obvious anthems.

🖤 SERIOUS BASS. A MASSIVE GRIN.

🎵 STAKKA & K.TEE – RUBBER BULLET
📀 Underfire | UDFR017 | 2001

🔥 THE NEXT HUNDRED STARTS UNDERFIRE.

After celebrating our roots with Original Nuttah, we step into another part of the collection: that turn-of-the-millennium world where Drum & Bass seemed determined to invent its own future.

Rubber Bullet is my choice to open that door.

There’s something about this era that keeps pulling me back. The tension, the groove, the sheer imagination. Music you could get completely lost inside.

🧬 DEEP VAULT DETAIL: Underfire and Audio Blueprint were two sides of Stakka & Skynet’s vision. Audio Blueprint gave their deeper, experimental ideas room to breathe; Underfire channelled that imagination into physical dancefloor impact.

Stakka described their approach as:

“making the music to a movie without having the visuals.”

That thought captures this whole world beautifully. Close your eyes and the room becomes somewhere else.

🤯 And look at the other side of this particular record…

Rubber Bullet shared its 12-inch with KEMAL & PAUL RESET’S Kontempt. In their April 2001 Knowledge interview, Stakka & Skynet confirmed the pairing had come out that January. Two different production partnerships on one serious piece of vinyl.

🔗 THE CONNECTION RUNS DEEPER.

K.Tee is Keir Tyrer the same producer who later co-founded Shogun Audio with Friction. Before that, he and Stakka had already built a catalogue on RAM and Liftin’ Spirit, including Orange Sunshine and a collaboration with Andy C, Danger Zone.

This record sits within a much bigger story: friendships and studio partnerships helping shape successive chapters of the culture.

🇯🇪 VANGUARD ARCHIVES: Reaching 100 made me appreciate how much history these shelves hold. The next hundred gives me a chance to keep sharing the records that matter to me and hopefully bring a few back into your lives too.

🖤 A NEW CHAPTER. STILL DIGGING DEEP.

🏆 VANGUARD VAULTS #100 💛 THE CENTURY 🏆

🔊 UK APACHI & SHY FX
- ORIGINAL NUTTAH
📀 SOUR • 1994 • Vault 100

100 records. So many memories. And for this milestone, we wanted a tune that takes us straight back to the heart of it all.

Before Vanguard, before Fire & Snare, before Terminal State and Terminology, there was the feeling this music gave us. The excitement of hearing something that seemed to belong entirely to our generation and culture.

Original Nuttah still holds that feeling for us.

The Goodfellas intro. Those warning horns. Apache’s voice. Then the amens hit then everyone knows what time it is 🔥

🗝️ SIX YEARS WAITING. TWO TAKES TO HISTORY.

Apache told Wax Poetics he’d written the lyrics around six years earlier. Hearing Shy’s Gangsta Kid gave him the rhythm he’d been waiting for.

They booked a studio in Victoria. After recording another idea, Apache asked them to play Gangsta Kid. Two takes later, the vocal was done.

He left without listening back. That weekend, he stayed home worrying nobody would like it. The next day, his phone was ringing with news of rewinds.

Shy remembered:

“Everything on the tune sounded like a hook.”

That’s what makes it extraordinary. The voice, the riddim, the spaces between them, every part gives the crowd something to recognise.

🧠 DEEP VAULT DETAIL

Apache explained that a “nuttah” could be someone determined to achieve their goals. The video’s images of Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther King reflected that meaning.

He remembered jungle bringing people from different backgrounds together, and feeling part of something. Behind that fierce delivery was a story about identity and belonging.

🇯🇪 VANGUARD ARCHIVES

We’ve welcomed Shy FX to Jersey many times. Having someone who helped shape our love of jungle become part of the nights we built here will always be special.

And to everyone who’s followed these 100 selections: thank you. Your memories, messages and conversations have made this far more than me pulling records from a shelf 🤍

💯 OUR CENTURY. OUR ROOTS. ORIGINAL NUTTAH.

🔐 VANGUARD VAULTS #099 🔐

💯 ONE MORE RECORD UNTIL THE CENTURY.
BUT FIRST… THIS ONE 🌀

🎵 BREAKAGE – TRANCE
📀 Inperspective Records | INP012 | 2006

99 records from the collection. So many memories and now we’re one away from 100. Honestly, seeing you connect with this music has made the whole journey mean more than we expected 🖤

For No.99, we wanted something you could really get lost in.

Those intricate Amen cuts. The little changes that keep catching your ear. That strange, hypnotic synth winding through everything. With Trance, you will find yourself following a different detail each time.

You can hear someone enjoying just how far a breakbeat can be taken.

💿 THE PRESSING: Trance took the A-side of this Inperspective 12″, with Comatose and Aw Yea! on the flip. Released in 2006 but listeners were already naming it among their favourites in January 2003. Three years of anticipation before the vinyl landed.

🔬 DEEP VAULT DETAIL: This record genuinely divided opinion. In the original 2006 discussions, some loved the intricate drums; others questioned the synth. Chris Inperspective responded:

“Glad to see that we can release stuff that challenges peoples views on what ‘proper’ DNB is…”

I love that conviction. A label trusting its ears and giving an unusual record a place.

🇯🇪 VANGUARD ARCHIVES: After all these years playing and promoting this music in Jersey and around Europe, records like this still make us stop and listen closer. Your comments, memories and love for these tunes have become part of the series too. Thank you for coming this far with me.

⏳ 99 VAULTS OPENED.
🔐 ONE VERY SPECIAL RECORD TO GO.

🎵 RONI SIZE / REPRAZENT – TRUST ME
📀 Talkin’ Loud | TLX 15 | 1996

🔊 THOSE FIRST STABS STILL DO IT FOR ME.

This is the kind of record I could talk about all night.

That bassline has so much personality. The drums roll, the whole thing swings, and there’s enough space to hear every little detail. I know what’s coming and still look forward to the drop. Every time.

Its original commercial vinyl release was the D-side of the double-12″ Reasons For Sharing EP in 1996, before appearing on New Forms in 1997.

And Roni says he made it in about an hour. 🤯

He included it as a DJ tool. Even the sample on the original is slightly out of time. That detail makes me love it more: the feel was there, and he knew when to leave it alone.

🧬 DEEP VAULT DETAIL: Around 2010, Andy C helped bring Trust Me back into circulation through his sets. Roni admitted:

“I started playing it again because Andy was playing it!”

A DJ reminding the producer to reach for his own record again. I love that.

🇯🇪 VANGUARD ARCHIVES: We’ve brought Roni to Jersey countless times, from our early Terminology events through to Vanguard. Having someone whose records meant so much to us come and play our own nights will always feel special. This tune belongs in that story and sharing it here brings it all back.

🖤 NEARLY 30 YEARS ON. I’M STILL TURNING THIS ONE UP.

🎵 CAPONE – PARADISE
📀 Hardleaders | HL014 | 1997

🌴 THIS IS WHY I STILL LOVE DIGGING THROUGH MY RECORDS.

This one takes me right back.

Capone is Dillinja and Paradise is a reminder of just how special his music was during this era.

I love the atmosphere in this tune. There’s something beautiful about it, but the drums and bass carry serious weight. It’s that combination that keeps bringing me back. Even knowing what’s coming, I still want to hear it unfold.

Released alongside Voice on Hardleaders, it also appeared in Grooverider’s Radio 1 Essential Mix on 26 January 1997. If you’re exploring this period, that mix is well worth your time.

🧬 DEEP VAULT DETAIL: Hardleaders was an offshoot of Kickin Records and home to some incredible Capone releases.

Something Dillinja later told UKF really stuck with me. Talking about his early studio methods, he described pushing his DAT recorder hard and backing off when he heard the sound breaking up:

“I never looked at any equipment, I just went with my ears.”

I love that. You can have all the equipment in the world, but you still need to know what sounds right.

🇯🇪 VANGUARD ARCHIVES: Records like Paradise were part of the years that shaped my taste and the music we went on to bring to Jersey. Before all the events, there was simply the excitement of finding another tune you couldn’t wait to play. Going through my vinyl for this series brings that feeling back.

🖤 NEARLY 30 YEARS ON.
I STILL GET LOST IN THIS ONE.

🎵 TOTALLY ENORMOUS EXTINCT DINOSAURS – GARDEN (CALIBRE REMIX)
📀 TEED1 | White-label 12″ | 2011

🌿 HOW CAN SO FEW WORDS MAKE YOU FEEL SO MUCH?

One of the most prized records in my collection. The moment it starts, I remember why.

Garden began with Orlando Higginbottom and fellow vocalist and songwriter Luisa Gerstein. Calibre found something extraordinary within it: a vocal fragment that could carry an entire world of feeling.

Rolling drums. Deep bass. Tender keys. A voice suspended between longing and comfort.

Each time that phrase returns, it seems to mean a little more. The music leaves room for whatever you bring to it.

🧬 DEEP VAULT DETAIL: Hybrid Minds chose this among their all-time favourite remixes, telling UKF:

“This is one of our favourite tracks – let alone remixes – of all time.”

They singled out Calibre’s use of that tiny vocal snippet alongside the keys and bassline. An extraordinary amount of emotion drawn from so little.

The 2011 TEED1 vinyl pairs the Calibre Remix with his Dub on the reverse. Two versions worth turning the record over for.

🇯🇪 VANGUARD ARCHIVES: We welcomed Calibre and Marcus Intalex to Jersey together in 2003. That history makes the connection personal, but Garden holds a place all of its own. One of those records I treasure because it brings me straight back to the feeling that started everything.

🖤 THE NEEDLE FINDS THE GROOVE.
THE MUSIC FINDS SOMETHING IN YOU.

🎵 D.KAY & EPSILON – SPACE QUEST
📀 Soul:r | SOULR011 | 2004

🌌 THE BREAKS KEEP YOU MOVING. THE ATMOSPHERE MAKES YOU STAY.

Some records reveal their depth in the space between the drums.

Space Quest surrounds restless Amen breaks with an atmosphere you can lose yourself in. The percussion twists and fractures; the melody gives everything room to breathe. That balance of intensity and escape is what makes this record so absorbing.

Released in January 2004 on the flip of D.Kay’s It’s On The Way, it found its home on Marcus Intalex and ST Files’ Manchester imprint, Soul:r a label whose catalogue still rewards listening beyond the obvious.

🧬 DEEP VAULT DETAIL: This was D.Kay’s first full 12-inch for Soul:r, following earlier compilation appearances. Months before release, he was already discussing Space Quest in a September 2003 interview, saying:

“pretty much everyone is caning it now”

Asked in that same interview to describe his sound, he answered:

“Broadband fullrange melodies.”

Three words that feel perfectly at home here. Expansive music with jungle running through its veins.

🇯🇪 VANGUARD ARCHIVES: Digging through Soul:r’s original newsletter uncovered something that stopped us in our tracks. The very announcement listing Space Quest also carries this tour date:

“03.10 - Terminal State, Jersey, UK: Marcus Intalex & Calibre.”

3 October 2003. Our own history, preserved alongside the music we loved. We also had the pleasure of playing alongside D.Kay at Cheeky Monday in Amsterdam another connection that makes this record feel personal.

Seeing Marcus’s name beside ours all these years later means more than we can put into words. 🕊️
