Clay Brick Wall Corner The prototype reimagines a building corner as a high-performance thermal mass system, integrating traditional materials with modern construction techniques to address extreme heat. Wool insulation infills a conventional wood frame structural system, providing a protective barrier against solar radiation while enhancing temperature moderation. The interior features dry-stacked clay bricks housed within a secondary structural frame, designed to maximize thermal energy storage. The bricks’ intricate pattern increases surface area, improving heat exchange with the surrounding air. Photography: Matthew Millman Team: Xinhui Harper Dong & Wenteng Zhao by @office.e.g

A belated share of the Forest to Forest Exhibition! Forest to Forest examines wood not as a static building material, but as a living, biogenic substance moving through ecological and temporal cycles. Through a constructed 2×4 gallery framework, decaying wood samples, and drawings tracing timber across California landscapes, the exhibition reveals wood in states of growth, use, decline, and regeneration. Centered on research at UC Berkeley’s Russell Research Station @natureatcal, the project explores how reclaimed lumber can be returned to forest ecosystems through designed decomposition—reframing architecture’s relationship to material lifecycles and ecological systems. Presented by the (Im)material Matters Lab @office.e.g (Liz Gálvez, Director) in collaboration with the Berkeley Wood Lab @berkeley.woodlab (Paul Mayencourt, Co-Director). Supported by the Lau Grants for Just Climate Futures and exhibited as part of 2026 Lau Just Climate Futures Exhibition: The Weather to Come presented by the Berkeley CED @ced_berkeley Our project team consisted of @ucberkeleyarch students: Naomi Lucia Manuel @_naomimanuel, Lincoln Ruiz-Truong @lincolnrt, and Joseph Sungjune Byun @josephbyun_70011789. We’ve begun building this summer’s M&A Courtyard Project, 𝐸𝒶𝓇𝓉𝒽𝑒𝓃 𝒞𝑜𝓂𝒻𝑜𝓇𝓉𝓈: 𝒜𝒾𝓇𝒾𝓃𝑔 𝐸𝒶𝓇𝓉𝒽, by Office e.g. / (Im)material Matters Lab led by Liz Gálvez, in the M&A x Craft Contemporary Courtyard! We’re incredibly excited to soon welcome you into, under, and around this staging of mass and fiber as shared infrastructures for collective comfort. 𝐸𝒶𝓇𝓉𝒽𝑒𝓃 𝒞𝑜𝓂𝒻𝑜𝓇𝓉𝓈 opens to the public on May 31, and we will hold an opening reception on May 30 from 7-9pm 🧱🧶🥂✨ But first, this holiday weekend, volunteers are invited to swing by the courtyard for a sneak peek: to meet the artist, the M&A Team, and our crew of builders and fabricators and to contribute to the weaving of the project’s canopy. Materials, refreshments, snacks, and camaraderie with friends new and old will be provided. Come say hi and weave a little! And return the following weekend to see your work atop the full pavilion. 🗣️ 2026! Summer! Courtyard! Project! We are so excited to announce the 2026 M&A courtyard project— 𝐸𝒶𝓇𝓉𝒽𝑒𝓃 𝒞𝑜𝓂𝒻𝑜𝓇𝓉𝓈: 𝒜𝒾𝓇𝒾𝓃𝑔 𝐸𝒶𝓇𝓉𝒽 is a courtyard installation led by Liz Gálvez (Office e.g. @office.e.g and the (Im)material Matters Lab) that stages mass and fiber as shared infrastructures for collective comfort in the LA summer. Building on Liz’s ongoing investigations into heat resilience and material experimentation, 𝐸𝒶𝓇𝓉𝒽𝑒𝓃 𝒞𝑜𝓂𝒻𝑜𝓇𝓉𝓈 is a civic proposition that adapts passive cooling strategies from desert contexts into the M&A @materialsandapplications x Craft Contemporary @craftcontemporary Courtyard. Earthen thermal mass columns anchor the site, paired with a lightweight, woven canopy that modulates shade, air movement, and light. These systems are not novel inventions but re-imagined inheritances: stone or earthen blocks and woven shade have long functioned as elemental infrastructures across cultures and climates. Recast in the courtyard, they compose an experimental ecology that makes heat’s stubborn but predictable movement legible. Visitors will encounter varied microclimates—cool, heavy earth; dappled woven shade; shifting breezes—that expand thermal design beyond mere survivability toward joy and collective participation in the face of intensifying heat. 🧱🧶💨 𝐸𝒶𝓇𝓉𝒽𝑒𝓃 𝒞𝑜𝓂𝒻𝑜𝓇𝓉𝓈 opens to the public on May 31, alongside Craft Contemporary's summer exhibitions. More information about our opening reception and summer programs will be shared very soon! 𝐸𝒶𝓇𝓉𝒽𝑒𝓃 𝒞𝑜𝓂𝒻𝑜𝓇𝓉𝓈 is commissioned and produced by Materials & Applications @materialsandapplications and made possible due to the critical support of consultants, including Paul Mayencourt (@paulmayencourt at the Berkeley Wood Lab @berkeley.woodlab), Salmaan Craig @salmaancraig, and Nous Engineering @nousla, and the generosity of funders including the Pasadena Art Alliance, UC Berkeley Arts Research Center, and UC Berkeley College of Environmental Design @ced_berkeley.
