João Macedo’s relationship with the ocean started at seven years old, when his grandmother took him bodysurfing on the rugged Atlantic coast at Praia Grande, Portugal.

He became the first Portuguese and European surfer to qualify for the World Surf League’s Big Wave Championship Tour, and caught the biggest wave of his career in Nazaré in 2022. But João has always been as interested in protecting the ocean as riding it. As co-founder of the World Surfing Reserves movement, he helped designate Ericeira as the world’s second World Surfing Reserve. Now, as President of the Hope Zones Foundation, he’s building a regenerative seaweed farm in Nazaré, using one of the world’s most famous surf breaks as a blueprint for sustainable ocean farming, and working with local fishing communities to show that marine protection and livelihoods can go hand in hand.

The ocean isn’t just something we love. It’s something we’re fighting to protect.

Off the coast of Nazaré, home to the biggest waves on Earth, we’ve built Portugal’s first regenerative seaweed farm — 22.5 hectares of living proof that we can work with the ocean, not against it.

We built it alongside the people who know these waters best: surfers, scientists and local fishermen.

Now we’re inviting the global surf community to be part of something bigger than one coastline. Every contribution restores biodiversity and brings the next 200 hectares closer.

Most of the year Nazaré is a fishing town with a lighthouse on a rock.

Then a storm spins up in the Atlantic, the canyon does its thing, and the ocean stands up.

Nazaré is known around the world for its enormous waves. But did you know that a group of big wave surfers are now helping steward this surf ecosystem?

We’re celebrating the impact of our recent Surf for the Ocean campaign all around the world, starting with our campaign partner @hopezones.foundation, whose team raised over $13,000 USD during the campaign to help grow its regenerative seaweed farm off the coast of Nazaré.

Building on work already underway, a team of big wave surfers and local fishermen are expanding the farm together – pairing generations of maritime knowledge with an innovative approach to ocean restoration, right offshore of Nazaré’s world-famous surf break.

A huge thank you to @officialjoaomacedo, Team Nazaré, and everyone who supported the campaign. This is what Surf for the Ocean is all about: helping locally led conservation efforts grow, and creating lasting impact for the places surfers love.

What started as youth advocacy has become a real journey of tangible impact: a €10,000 grant for the Hope Zones Foundation to build Portugal’s first regenerative seaweed farm, in Nazaré.

This would not have been possible without the unwavering passion and immense effort of Benton!

This pioneering farm is creating a blueprint for ocean restoration across the Atlantic. The kelp canopies Benton helped fund will act as a vital keystone ecosystem by absorbing carbon, rebuilding complex habitats, and giving local fish a safe place to thrive.

First time surfing Nazaré. A day I’ll never forget. 🌊

Standing in front of waves that big changes everything. The power, the speed, the sound of the ocean… suddenly you realise just how small you are out there.

There was fear, adrenaline and a lot of respect — but above all, there was that incredible feeling of pushing myself beyond anything I had experienced before.

A huge thank you to @officialjoaomacedo , @ericrebiere and @nicvonrupp for giving me the opportunity to experience something so special, for sharing their knowledge and for making me feel safe in such a powerful place. 🤍
And a special thank you to @tonylaureano_ for lending me the board and helping make this moment possible. 🙏🤍

My first taste of big waves in Nazaré… and honestly, it felt like magic.

I went into Nazaré nervous and full of respect. I came out with a huge smile, a full heart… and definitely wanting more.
