“It was a long way to the detention center on purpose. The distance is on purpose – to keep us away. But friends, are they going to keep us away?”

On Tuesday, hundreds of people gathered outside of the Metro Detention Center in DTLA, to conclude the more than week-long, 96-mile ‘Clear the Road to Freedom’ pilgrimage organized by @cluejustice and @la.sacredresistance . Starting at Adelanto Detention facility in the High Desert, faith leaders across LA made the journey, calling to close the detention centers and speaking out against federal immigration policies, despite record heatwaves and temperatures reaching over 100 degrees.

“Nobody is going to keep us away from the families to [let them] know that they are not alone,” said Rabbi Susan Goldberg of @nefesh . “If you told me we had to walk many more miles… my pilgrim siblings who have walked these miles would say, ‘Where are we walking next?’ We will not be kept away.”

According to @tanggolmigrantemovement , at least four Filipinos are currently being held in Adelanto Detention center, where conditions have been described as ‘inhumane’ and ‘unlivable’. This week it was announced ICE is beginning to ramp up operations across California for the next 45 days at least, according to reporting by several news sources.

Siklab Media spoke to Mika of @malayalosangeles who came to support the pilgrimage on its last day. “It’s very inspiring and touching to see so many people come together… to care for our neighbors,” said Mika.

Fernando of @migrante.8ones8 thinks more Filipinos should get involved with the growing movement against detention and deportation, saying “Who else is going to help each other but us?”

As attacks against immigrants rise, local organizations in Los Angeles across religious and cultural lines are working together to protect their communities. taken in Metropolitan Detention Center, Los Angeles by @officialkatelyndo

EP 2: THE ACT OF KILLING (2012)
🎬 Dir. Joshua Oppenhiemer

Indonesian Americans wya? 🇮🇩🤨

This documentary is one that never leaves you once you watch it. I watched it for the first time last year as headlines about the 'Gen Z' protests poured out of Indonesia and it completely changed my perspective of what documentaries could accomplish. Additional reading I'd recommend alongside this film is 'The Jakarta Method' by Vincent Bevins, if you want to learn more! One of the most critically acclaimed documentaries of all time, this is a must watch for all Asian Americans!

🚨 ICE raids across California are hitting South Asian communities hard, but this isn’t the first time their community has dealt with being targeted by the government. South Asian activists say their past experiences are helping them lead the fight against violence from law enforcement. 🗣️

Episode 3 of LA Untold

➡️ After 9/11, South Asian communities were disproportionately impacted by police surveillance, harassment, detainment and deportations in the name of public safety. Shakeel Syed of @SouthAsianNetwork and Hamid Khan of @StopLAPDSpying opened up to ElevAsian about their experiences being monitored by law enforcement and how it informs their fight today.

Wage theft is the most common form of theft in the country. Filipino caretakers are leading the fight against it in SoCal! ✊☀️

Episode 2 of LA Untold

In February, former caretakers and local Filipino grassroots orgs scored a major victory in their End Amity Wage Theft campaign when the CA Labor Commissioners' Office cited Amity In-Home Care Services and its CEO, Nancy Reyes, for $2.3 million in lost wages and other labor violations.

Local organizations say that Filipino migrant workers are often the target of labor trafficking. Organizations like @filipinomigrantcenter and @migrantelosangeles work with them, teach them their rights and organize with them.

“We come here looking for opportunities, to better the future of our families, but then we face other labor issues here as well. The issue of labor rights has always been consistent in our history, here in our new home in the States, and also back home in our home countries, like the Philippines,” said Kim Brucal, an organizer with @gabrielasouthbay

The caretakers and organizers are continuing the fight, demanding that the Philippines Consulate do more to provide support and protection to overseas migrant workers.

Incarceration is an AAPI issue too.

Episode 1 of LA Untold

ElevAsian sat down with @apiriselosangeles the only re-entry organization serving AAPI populations in SoCal, to learn more about how they built a community for formerly incarcerated AAPIs in LA and the obstacles they face after coming home.

💡Did you know the CDCR does not publish data regarding AAPI populations in its prisons, leaving local organizations to collect it. “That absence of data intensifies the obscurity surrounding the criminal justice system… Nobody really understands what those facilities are like, except people directly impacted by them. That's all intensified when you don't even have the most basic, cursory data about who is going to prison,” said Wanda Bertram from @prisonpolicy

Tìm Kiếm Cộng Đồng (Finding Community) - Documentary by Katelyn Do

Airing on Spectrum 1 News and available on uscannenbergmedia.com

One year ago, I set out to make a documentary about elder immigrants within the Vietnamese American diaspora. After meeting Dang Do and Sen Pham, I knew that their story was one that I wanted to help share. With the help of @giveushopeoc, I highlighted a story about overcoming challenges through the strength of community. To this day, it's the project that I am most proud to have completed. Producing, filming, and editing a documentary start to finish was the most challenging project I've done, but I would not trade that experience for the world. This film is dedicated to my bà nội, bà ngoại, and ong ngoại. My grandparents who left everything they knew at an older age to go to a foreign country, leaving everything behind to be with their families. Too often, we neglect the experiences of our elderly, especially within immigrant communities, despite many of them facing disproportionate hardship due to their age, ability, and language barriers. I hope to keep covering these important demographics as a journalist. Thankful that I get to call this my first documentary!

Special thank you to @uscimpact and everyone who helped make this documentary a reality! Will never be able to thank you enough! @mikecow_ @kryskhuat @anniephaann @jjaydomingo @jenny.brown by @officialkatelyndo

The #Emmys were this past weekend, and @sympathizerhbo was one of the nominated shows... but despite submissions to 27 different categories, it received only one performance nomination for Robert Downey Jr.

The show is an adaptation of @viet_t_nguyen's book of the same name, recontextualizing the Vietnam War from the Vietnamese perspective.

Our editor @datelynko sat down with actors @thatduynguyen and @yungpykle to discuss their time on the series.

Read the full story in the link in bio.

To anyone looking in, it seems like USC senior, Kelvin Nguyen, can do it all. He works three jobs: Director of Trojan Health Volunteers with the Joint Educational Project, finance director for EMSC (a volunteer EMT service at USC), and a research assistant at Price School of Social Work. Nguyen balances his job with being a Health and Human Sciences major on a pre-Health track.

It’s really no wonder his family is so proud of him. But the journey to get where he is now wasn’t always easy.

As a child of Vietnamese refugees, growing up in Oakland wasn’t so easy. Nguyen grew up around gang violence, drugs, and poverty. His parents were always working and Nguyen had to figure out how to make his own way in the world.

“Them working 50 to 60 hours a week wasn’t because they didn’t care. It was because it was more important for them to put food on the table,” said Nguyen.

Seeing his parents work so hard for a better life motivated Nguyen to hustle himself. However, Nguyen fell into a pattern of partaking in illegal activities in order to make money. In Nguyen’s junior year of high school, he decided to turn his life around and leave the chapter of crime in his past by focusing on school.

Fast forward to now, Nguyen uses his lived experience and the lessons he’s learned to guide other students who may not have the resources. In almost every one of his extracurriculars and jobs, Nguyen assumes a leadership position and acts as a mentor to other students.

Nguyen’s story echoes the story of so many children of Immigrants in America today. With everything he’s learned, Nguyen hopes to keep helping people with his knowledge.
