On Inside the Set, Set Decorator Jess Royal and Production Designer Chris Trujillo @mjoin moderator Halina Siwolop SDSA @officialsdsa to discuss the show’s sets. Royal explains that Derek’s bedroom was partly based on Francis from Pee-wee’s Big Adventure, with Easter eggs including the door knocker from Francis’s front door, alongside splatter paint curtains, video games, and a Nintendo.

The Set Decorators Society of America (SDSA) has officially joined the Coalition for American Production (CAP) as a Partner Organization. This morning in Washington D.C., SDSA leadership and members teamed up with CAP on Capitol Hill to advocate for a crucial national production incentive aimed at bringing film and television productions back to the United States. This includes SDSA Business Members Fred and Jason Arens of Objects, Pam Elyea of History for Hire, Jake Baer of Newel (also CAP Board Member) along with Set Decorator Edward McLaughlin SDSA and Jessica Heyman from Art for Film (not in photo but in attendance and proud CAP Member). Set Decorator Halina Siwolop SDSA @officialsdsa on building the Hooverville shantytown for Spider-Noir @spidernoirprime .
For the Depression-era world, Siwolop approached the shantytown through adaptive reuse — treating salvaged street materials as building stock for shelter. The dressing drew on extensive research into how fabric, wood, and tin metal were repurposed for survival in 1930s New York. Working with Production Designer Warren Alan Young, Siwolop helped realize two Noir worlds in one — every set element built to read in both black-and-white and full color. SPIDER-NOIR 1930s New York City, circumstances force down & out private eye Ben Reilly [Nicholas Cage] to resume his former superhero iteration, “The Spider”. Set Decorator Halina Siwolop SDSA and Production Designer Warren Alan Young, no strangers to depicting the period, had to create two Noir worlds in one, creating sets to be filmed in black & white, and in color. This meant that every piece of furniture, color on the walls or drapery on the windows, every set element had to be chosen to work in gray-scale black & white and in full vibrant color, all to tell the superhuman spider story.
