The sound of a cough doesn’t always tell us how sick a kiddo is. One of the biggest things I pay attention to as a pediatric nurse and mom? How the kiddo is breathing and acting!😷

Being a pediatric nurse does NOT magically turn off the mom anxiety🙃

I can confidently reassure other parents all day long… but when it’s my own kid? Suddenly I’m like 👀🫠

Please tell me I’m not the only one🙏🏼🩵💚

🧻‼️If it fits through a toilet paper roll, it’s small enough to be a choking hazard.

Kids LOVE putting EVERYTHING in their mouths. An easy way to visualize just how small some choking hazards can be is the good ol’ toilet roll test.

Think: coins, small toy parts, grapes, paper clips, whole nuts, AirPods, batteries, magnets, bottle caps, gum.

⚠️Important: The toilet paper roll is just a visual tool—not a perfect safety test. Choking risk depends on the child, the object, and the shape/texture of the item.

🚨WARNING: button batteries and magnets are especially dangerous if swallowed and require immediate medical attention.🚨

Take a look around your home because you might be surprised by what makes the list. 👀

kids are wild, unpredictable little humans🙃 and sometimes the things they do that make us worry actually have a totally reasonable explanation…

mouth breathing + dry mouth + postnasal drainage

developing immune systems + lots of germ exposure + daycare/school

tiny blood vessels near the front of the nose + dry air + picking/rubbing

changes with breast milk/formula + introducing solids + illness

strong gag reflex + mucus + forceful coughing

lots of blood vessels in the scalp + soft tissue that swells easily by @offshiftmom

Let’s talk about alternating Tylenol and Motrin because this is one of the questions I get asked ALL the time💛

Tylenol is acetaminophen, and Motrin is ibuprofen. They are two different medications, so they can be used simultaneously.

I personally prefer Motrin because I believe it works better! I start by giving Motrin, and then give a dose of Tylenol equally in between the two doses of Motrin.

Tylenol and Motrin don’t automatically need to be alternated and given on a schedule. Fever medicine is mainly for comfort, and not to make the number on the thermometer normal. But as a nurse and mom, when treating a fever or pain, this is my approach😊

***Example only*** doses and timing depend on your child’s individual situation

Always dose medications based on your child’s current weight and use an oral syringe to give the most accurate amount.

If your child’s symptoms aren’t controlled with one medication and you plan to give both Tylenol and Motrin, you MUST keep track of exactly what you gave and when.

Ibuprofen is generally not recommended for babies under 6 months unless your pediatrician specifically recommends it.

Save this post for your next sick day🤒 And comment if you have any questions about dosing or medication schedules!!! by @offshiftmom

🚩🚩🚩

1. Difficulty in breathing 🫁
Retractions, nasal flaring, grunting, or trouble speaking (not just a runny nose or bad cough)

2. Dehydration 🫥
Less than 5 or 6 wet diapers in 24 hours, dry/cracked lips, no tears, or unusually sleepy

3. Not acting like themselves‼️
Difficult to wake, lethargic, or confused

And as a pediatric nurse + mom…
I will ALWAYS tell you to trust your gut. You know when something isn’t right with your child💛

Did anyone say shots of espresso?! ☕️☕️☕️

When it comes to sleep regressions, consistency is key!!! Keep toddler bedtime routines predictable, make sure babies are getting enough daytime sleep and appropriate wake time for their age, and remember that it’s just a temporary phase. You will sleep again!🙏🏼😵‍💫💤
