🚨 What happens if someone falls off an offshore oil rig?

It’s not just someone jumping into the water and hoping for the best.

A man-overboard alarm is raised, a lifebuoy is deployed, the control room tracks the position, and the rescue team can launch a fast rescue boat to locate the person.

If the weather or situation is severe, additional emergency procedures may be used, including helicopter evacuation when possible.

That’s why offshore workers train for these scenarios before they ever need them in real life.

But if you're watching this thinking, “How do I even get onto an offshore rig?” — that's where most beginners get stuck.

📘 Our Offshore Career Guide shows you which entry-level jobs to target, what certificates you may need, how to prepare your CV, and where to find legitimate vacancies.

🔥 This is the easiest way to learn how to get an offshore job without experience.

Do offshore oil rigs really get attacked by pirates?

Piracy is a real concern in some high-risk regions, but offshore security involves vessel tracking, restricted zones, crew briefings and additional protection where necessary.

And while the pay and rotation can be attractive, getting onto an offshore rig is the part most beginners don't know how to navigate.

After spending two weeks on an offshore oil rig, this is how lonely we actually are while making $750+ a day.

You might imagine one worker surrounded by nothing but ocean, but an offshore rig is more like a small floating community.

Hundreds of workers can live, eat, work and relax together. You get your cabin, meals, entertainment and time to connect with family when the signal allows.

But if you're wondering how to actually get a job offshore, that's the part most beginners struggle with.

🌙 This is what it’s really like working night shift on an offshore oil rig.

12-hour shifts, a rig lit up like a city in the middle of the ocean, hot meals at midnight, and some of the clearest night skies you’ll ever see.

It’s demanding, but offshore rotations can give you substantial time off at home between shifts.

Three years ago, I traded my 9 to 5 for a job on an offshore oil rig, and my first year paid $150,000. 🌊

Two weeks on, two weeks off. Flights, accommodation, and meals are covered while I’m offshore, so living costs stay low during every rotation. The shifts are long and being away from home is tough, but the lifestyle and the pay have been worth it for me.

Pay varies by role, company, and experience, and most people earn less when they start. If you’re serious about breaking into offshore work, our complete guide in the bio shows you how to get your foot in the door. 🔗

🚁 This is what happens when someone gets seriously sick on an offshore oil rig.

Offshore installations typically have medical facilities, trained personnel, and emergency procedures. If a worker needs hospital treatment, a helicopter evacuation may be arranged when conditions allow.

It’s one of the realities of working far from land.

💰 I made $150,000 in a year working as an offshore caterer!

With a two-weeks-on, two-weeks-off rotation, you can enjoy scheduled time at home between shifts. Some offshore contracts also cover accommodation, meals and transportation.

But salaries vary depending on the company, experience and position, so knowing where to start matters.
