Lost Caravaggio masterpiece debuts in Germany.
Berlinde De Bruyckere responds with a new commission.
11 September – 25 September 2026
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Today, 29 September, marks the birthday of Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, born in 1571.

In a life that lasted less than forty years, Caravaggio fundamentally changed the language of European painting. Painted around 1605, the work captures Mary Magdalene in a moment suspended between exhaustion, grief and spiritual ecstasy.

It is this encounter that becomes the starting point for Berlinde De Bruyckere’s new commission, shown beside Caravaggio for the first time in Berlin: a dialogue between two artists, four centuries apart, connected by their attention to flesh, suffering and the human condition.

Berlinde de Bruyckere’s sculpture carries distress in its detail. Dark bruises mark the heels — a small but devastating sign of a body dragged to the limits of endurance.

Created in direct response to Caravaggio’s Mary Magdalene in Ecstasy, and shown for the first time in Berlin, the work stands beside the painting at the Embassy of Italy. Painter and sculptor, centuries apart, open a quiet conversation about flesh, suffering, and the human condition.

Now open in Berlin.

Caravaggio and Berlinde De Bruyckere brings together 'Mary Magdalene in Ecstasy' (c. 1606) by Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio and a newly commissioned sculpture by Berlinde De Bruyckere at the Embassy of Italy in Berlin.

Presented by @offsite_arts in partnership with the Embassy of Italy in Berlin as part of Berlin Art Week, the exhibition marks the first public presentation in Germany of Caravaggio’s rediscovered masterpiece.

Created in direct response to Mary Magdalene in Ecstasy, De Bruyckere’s new sculpture extends her ongoing Liggende Arcangelo series, opening a cross-century dialogue around corporeality, transcendence and the human condition. The work brings together the figure of the angel and the female body in a hybrid form marked by vulnerability, restlessness and profound inner turmoil.

#artcubeloves when historical masterworks get paired and create a dialogue with contemporary art. While exploring Berlin Art Week, we were absolutely delighted to discover a lost Caravaggio masterpiece debut in Germany and see Berlinde De Bruyckere respond with a new commission.

Offsite Arts, in partnership with the Embassy of Italy in Berlin, presents the first public showing in Germany of Caravaggio’s ‘Mary Magdalene in Ecstasy’ (c. 1606), exhibited alongside a newly commissioned sculpture by Berlinde De Bruyckere. Curated by @tjioe.hecken and @felipeschwager, the two works explore physicality, spirituality, and vulnerability across centuries.

We’d also like to wish Berlinde De Bruyckere a happy birthday! Today we celebrate you and your extraordinary practice, a body of work that continues to explore vulnerability and strength, suffering and care, the body and its transformations with remarkable intensity.

As part of Berlin Art Week and supported by Monopol Magazin, the presentation is on display at the Embassy of Italy until 25 September. To plan your visit, please book a timeslot through Offsite Arts.

Caravaggio painted this Mary Magdalene in Ecstasy in 1606, the same year he killed Ranuccio Tomassoni and fled Rome. There is no proof that the painting is autobiographical, of course, but I find it impossible to look at it without wondering how much of his own fear, guilt or hope for forgiveness found its way into her.

He gives us remarkably little to work with. There is no halo, no angel, hardly any setting at all. Magdalene simply emerges from the darkness with her head thrown back, her eyes closed and her mouth slightly open. You can read the expression as prayer, pain, pleasure, collapse. Nothing in the painting settles the question for you. God never appears; all we are allowed to see is what an encounter with the divine might do to a human body.

More than four centuries later, Berlinde De Bruyckere answers Caravaggio with M.M. MMXXVI — Maria Magdalena 2026.

My first reaction was actually confusion, because I did not even realise I was looking at a woman. The wax body is corpse-pale, the face is hidden and the whole figure seems caught somewhere between collapse and resistance. Beneath it, torn dark linoleum falls into heavy folds that echo the drapery in an old painting, but it also looks like something left behind after destruction.

The four centuries between them don’t really feel like a distance. You look at Caravaggio’s Magdalene and then at De Bruyckere’s, and the same question is still there in the body: is this pain, ecstasy, surrender, survival? De Bruyckere makes it harsher and more anonymous, but she doesn’t break the thread. She picks it up four hundred years later.

I still can’t decide what exactly is happening to her Magdalene. I think that is probably why I kept thinking about it afterwards.

Caravaggio’s radical realism profoundly shaped Flemish artists and the course of European painting. Four centuries later, that influence finds a powerful counterpart in the work of Berlinde De Bruyckere.

For this exhibition, De Bruyckere has created a new sculpture specifically inspired by Caravaggio’s Mary Magdalene in Ecstasy — a work that will be shown for the first time in Berlin.

Presented in dialogue at the Embassy of Italy, the pairing opens an intimate cross-century conversation about the body, vulnerability, and transcendence.
