My largest largemouth to date! 11lbs 12oz

( I hate the term PB I have no clue why it bothers me, but I won’t use it!) This fish crushed a 5.8 Jackall Rhythmwave swimbait. On this day my top 5 bass would’ve went a combined weight of 40+lbs. Talk about one hell of a day on foot.

I was so excited I hugged her!

July 3rd, 2014- I had made a cast into a large school of fish chasing mackerel. I had worked the @strategicangler frantic back in without a bump, and now with the lure just 4 feet from the tip of my rod I had ran out of room. I had paused the lure here for a split second when from underneath I watched this bass come up and inhale it in an explosive fashion. Having barely any line out I was sure the hook set would be good, but the fact that I keep my drag tight, these close quarters could pose a problem. As the bass dropped me to my knees on the slippery rocks I held on trying to back off on the drag a bit. I can probably count on one hand the times I’ve needed to touch a drag knob during a fight and this would be one of them. She peeled some yards even with the drag still fairly tight and stopped deep along the edge. It was now time to take to a little higher ground and keep her from the lobster pots or rubbing me off the ledge. This is where experience came in and I fought her deep instead of trying to battle her close with so many obstructions. I knew the current and pressure would weigh heavy on her. After a few minutes she was exhausted and began to move in. I slid her through the rock weed and grabbed on to her lower jaw. I knew right away she was over 40 and a hunch she’d go 50. After putting her on the 60lb boga my hunch was right. The scale stopped at the first mark over 50lbs. Plug builder Paul Moriarty had been fishing next to me and quickly came over to snap a few photos before I slipped her back in and away she swam. I had caught many 40lb fish in my lifetime and 3 over forty on this particular day, but this one would become the biggest Striped Bass of my life and still is to this day. I’m often asked if I regret not keeping that fish. My answer is “No, if anything I regret hanging her on the boga”

Apex

I stepped onto the ice at 4:30am and was stepping off before 9am. Things were starting to get hairy on the edges and I really didn’t want to swim back. There’s something about melting ice and nasty weather that makes them eat. It’s been warm and raining for two days now with a snow storm on the way that will probably only add to the deteriorating ice. Not sure if it’s over, but I’m guessing it’s close this late in the game. Be safe out there!

Autumn, a Nor’easter, and the Berkshires

We decided to pack the jeep and head west for a few days of fishing, hiking and unwinding. Lots of color starting to show throughout the Berkshires and the fishing, did not disappoint. The crisp air this time of year is energizing. The high winds and falling leaves did make fishing the rivers a bit tricky, but it was manageable. We caught some beautiful holdover browns, , smallmouth, panfish and some gorgeous pike. Definitely a much needed trip. Though it feels good to be back home. I am going to miss soaking in the hot tub at the end of the day lol

If you fish enough, you’ll make some strange catches

Back in 2012 during the fall run. I was riding my bike west from the east end of the canal cape side. I was watching schools of bass chase Mack’s along the rocks when I saw what looked like a torpedo ray (very common in the fall) I turned back around and as I hopped down the rocks I couldn’t believe my eyes. This monk fish was cruising along the bottom in about 8’ of water. I quickly dropped a white smiling bill bucktail in front of it and it opened wide. Engulfing the jig! The fight was nothing spectacular but it had been a first for me! Having only heard tales of them being caught by old timers. It seemed like urban legend than reality. I can’t remember what she taped out at, but I believe it was 32 or 34lbs when I weighed it in at Cape Cod Charlies under the Bourne bridge. I got my hands on the Polaroid before he closed up shop. I’ll have to see if I can dig it up. Great times!

Nature is both beautiful and terrifying.

Cecropia Moth Caterpillar 🐛 will turn into North America’s largest moth. This caterpillar is host to Tachinid flies 🪰 A parasitic fly that will lay eggs on the caterpillar and its larvae will consume the caterpillar.

I spent almost my entire childhood on the water. Every moment we had, my parents had me on the water. One of my favorite pastimes was crabbing. Whether it was with baited lines or standing in a John boat searching the shallows and scooping them up before they could escape. You had to be quick and it definitely took a lot of coordination. I grew up eating blue crabs and lobster just about every weekend till at the age of 14 on a camping trip I became allergic. I’ve carried that shellfish allergy the rest of my life and it definitely makes things difficult at times considering my livelihood, but I wouldn’t have it any other way 🙌🏽 🦀 🎣
