For every £1 you spend on your energy bill this is where your money goes if you are on a standard variable tariff ⬇️

Figures are approximate due to rounding

⚡ 47 pence - wholesale costs, buying energy for customers.

🔌 24 pence - network costs, pays for building and maintaining pipes, wires, and networks that deliver energy to your home.

🏢 17 pence - supplier business costs , covers day-to-day running costs for energy suppliers and the cost of the smart meter rollout.

🏛️ 6 pence - policy, supports government schemes like renewable energy and help for vulnerable customers.

📈 3 pence - Earnings Before Interest and Taxes (EBIT), profit made by suppliers before taxes and interest.

🛡⚖️️ 2 pence – headroom, allows suppliers to manage uncertainty in their costs. Levelisation, making sure prepayment and Direct Debit customers pay the same standing charge.

🧾 5 pence - VAT (only on gas as now excluded from electricity bills from October 2026 to March 2027) the tax added to your bill.
