Our ecosystems here in Florida have faced the wrath of greed and ignorance for decades. The springs, the glades, and all their flora & fauna are suffering at the hands of reckless development. When is enough going to be enough? When the springs are completely smothered in algae blooms caused by our excessive runoff from unethical development, waste management, & poor farming practices? When the spring ecosystem fails and its inhabitants die? When we can’t enjoy their crystal waters any more?When the aquifer runs dry as a result of poor regulations allowing greedy businessmen to rob our precious limited fresh water supply?When we’ve built on every last pocket of green space? Because literal pockets are all that remains. When the critically endangered panther population returns to drastically low numbers, or extinction? Enough is already far behind us. As a lover of God’s incredible creation & all of its’ life, I can’t stay quiet about it anymore.Humans are naturally more inclined to care only once we’ve been personally impacted. I hope witnessing these beautiful water puppies does that for you. Nature through my eyes is art. It’s my peace & my passion to encapsulate my experiences & create a conduit for those feelings to spread. Because that’s where change awaits. Bauer & I spend most of our free time enjoying the little bit of wilderness that remains in our part of South Florida. Nature is a huge part of my life, it’s my peace, my refuge, my hearts home. Always has been. The past few years here in South Florida have been crushing as I’ve watched every last pocket of greenery I enjoyed as a kid get obliterated for the incessant construction of apartment complexes and warehouses. Our nature is suffering. Too often I find myself rescuing injured creatures or removing dead ones from the road so they can rest in peace where they belong. Back to nourish the cycle of life that they were so wrongfully ripped out of.The reckless & rapid development of Wild Florida is something I can no longer stay quiet about. You’ll be seeing some of that here as Bauer is very much involved in every thing I do. I set out across the globe to find my roots, and I discovered a forest. Now I stand upon the same ground as my ancestors, recollecting stories through the flavors of heavenly mulberries and blood oranges from my families generational trees, whose existence is fresh knowledge to me. I gaze up at the second floor of the abandoned old farm house, whose hollowed windows still have dusty curtains billowing in the wind, and I wonder. Which window was my grandmothers? My uncles? My aunts? My great grandparents? Did they watch the cows from here? Did my great grandfather lean out that window and ponder how he would tap the underground spring he discovered atop the hill in the near distance? Did my aunts and uncles bust out that door as children, racing to the mulberry tree at the foot of this long dusty driveway? My mind travels, as I stuff my mouth with those very berries. Blood red juice stains my hands as it trickles down to my wrists. Stories buried in my ancestry rise to the surface as my own blood trickles down into the Earth, announcing my return.
