Cultism in Nigeria began in 1952 with the founding of the National Association of Seadogs (Pirates Confraternity) at the University College Ibadan by young students led by Wole Soyinka. It was originally created out of youthful imagination and intellectual rebellion against colonial mentality, tribalism, elitism, and social injustice — not violence. As years passed, other groups emerged from different campuses, including the Buccaneers in the 1970s, Vikings in the 1980s, Black Axe, Mafia, and several others. Many of these groups carried ideals of Pan-Africanism, African unity, brotherhood, protection of Africans, and youth empowerment in their early visions before violence and criminality later distorted their purpose.

Today, African youths must remember that unity is more important than division. No one is coming to save this generation but ourselves. We must rise together to build our nations, support one another, and push Africa forward collectively.

The same spirit applies to music and culture. There is no “Big 5” — every artist who has broken barriers globally has contributed to taking Afrobeats to the world and creating opportunities for the next generation. Art is beautiful, and music is art.
