POSTS STORIES REELS
Andreas Bovensiepen himself speaking on the 4.6iS ā€” Dr. Reitzle and Dr. Goeschel werenā€™t quite satisfied with the 4.4L V8 in the E53ā€“so they called on ALPINA to help. ALPINA already had drivetrain from their B10 V8 (E39) so they began testing it in an X5 (E53) body. Originally, Dr. Reitzle wanted ALPINA themselves to make ~3,500 4.6iS units/yearā€”but this number would put tremendous stress on the Buchloe factory so ALPINA couldnā€™t do it themselves. But, to continue pushing this special project forward, ALPINA made an ALPINA X5 prototype (see pictures šŸ¤Æ) that has never been shared with the public until today. After testing, this is where ALPINA & BMW created what eventually became 10,467 units of the 4.6iS in Spartanburg. This story is a big reason why I love the 4.6iS so much. The amount of work, trust, partnership, risk, operations and enthusiasm that went into this project was incredible. Especially when you consider it was nearly 25 years ago. This model paved the way for so many to follow in its tracksā€¦ by @ogx5m
Photos I took from a couple events in 2025ā€” ā€¢ ALPINA X5 Prototype ā€¢ Estoril 4.6iS (Dr. Helmut Pankeā€™s Limo) ā€¢ Imola 4.6iS (apart of BMW Classic USA) I would like to do an ALPINA X5 tribute car but the front spoiler and interior bits would be challenging to source/fabricate. The rear axle dynamic wheels are available on ALPINA Classic site but front axle sizing has been discontinued. Would have to find those alsoā€¦ Last thing would need to respray my Estoril car in ALPINA Blue and get gold deko set. by @ogx5m
4.6iS Registry is LIVE: 46isregistry.com No more guessing on how rare a specific 4.6iS isā€¦ The main point for me creating this site is my love for the model and the community around keeping them on the road. Hope this can grow into something all 4.6iS owners and fans can enjoy for years to come! Will be updating/improving the site on a weekly basis. Please provide feedback of any kindā€”good or bad šŸ‘ by @ogx5m
A huge thanks to @ogx5m, without whom this post would not be possible. Following his brilliant write up on @bmwblog, I felt it's only right to further amplify the legend of this mythical Buchloe beast. Before it became the legendary 4.6is, Buchloe dropped a B10 V8 into an E53 frame in strict confidence, crafting a working prototype almost entirely in-house at Munichā€™s request. It was a clandestine exercise in raw muscle, a heavyweight utility chassis infused with Alpinaā€™s signature dark art, built to explore a performance frontier that BMW executives weren't yet sure the world was ready for. That raw ambition, however, quickly outgrew Alpina's small facilities when Munich demanded 3,500 units a year. The blueprint was absorbed by corporate hands and shifted across the Atlantic to Spartanburg, where engines were assembled using Alpina-supplied internals to forge the 10,467-strong X5 4.6is. While its mass-produced descendants claimed the spotlight, the original prototype met a starkly unglamorous end, relegated to humble parts runs for BMW Classic before sadly facing the final silence of the crusher. #BMW #BMWM #Alpina #Cars #X5 by @ogx5m
